Title: Bronscopy and Aorta
Post by: tweetykiss on June 10, 2007, 07:29:12 AM
Tomorrow my husband is having his broncoscopy and we need prayers more than anything that there is nothing further wrong otherwise they have to open up his chest and then I wonder how life threatening that is.....he was in a near fatal auto accident back in summer of 02 and it tore his aorta (an injury in which most people don't survive) and he had the best surgeons work on him and repair it...despite that fact he was still told just when they wheeled him in surgery "there is a chance you may not survive the operation or you may be paralyzed from the waist down, do you still want the surgery?", my husband said "Yes".

Now back in fall of 05, he started to spit up blood and he was hospitalized for a week and hardly any more incidents so he was released but the doctor handling the case then thought he should keep having biopsies on his thyroid to check for any malignancies.....none have been found but he does have a benign nodule there.

Now two months ago, he started spitting up blood again so his GP set him up with a lung doctor and they now want this scope done and they have a few theories they want to rule out.  They want to make sure there is no bleeding in the lungs or that he has no pnemonia and they also want to see that when the aorta surgery was done, if they had put staples somewhere on his tubes and if so, if those are getting loose thus causing the bleeding...now he has not spit up blood in several weeks now and I was concerned if his aorta is torn again and he said no because otherwise he would have severe chest pains.....now what is not comforting to know is that he did say there is always a risk when surgery involves the heart or lungs....I am so scared and I hope there is nothing there....he said when he checked him he did not hear anything in the air sacs.....he also said the CT scan did not show anything....so I simply hope this is just ruling things out and that they are not holding back on anything...

Please pray for us that there is nothing........Please tell me I am being paranoid if you feel I am......I cannot stand the thought of them opening his chest again since they said it is life threatening......I am scared.........

Tweetykiss, I do not think you are being paranoid. I think you are just being concerned and caring. I will definitely pray for you. It sounds like they don't think there's anything seriously wrong and they just want to stay on top of things to prevent anything bad from happening down the line. So in that regard, it sounds like you have good doctors who are trying to look out for your husband. The more they can rule out, then the less you have to worry about. You and your husband will definitely be in my prayers.

Thanks for the prayers ladies.....I appreciate it....I took him this morning and it went well....he had to be in recovery for an hour because they have to monitor blood pressure and heart rate and then he was fine....they didn't see anything abnormal and all they saw was regular secretions which we all have to have...they did take a biopsy and we will know something in a week.........but does not look like they have to cut his chest open....than high heavens and the sun Godess......
