Title: MRSA
Post by: happykuffy on June 09, 2007, 03:00:29 PM
My Dad's been on dialysis now for about 2 months and last week. after results came back from his cultures, he  was diagnosed with MRSA : Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus .  Just got out of the hospital after having a fever, no appetite, dehydrated, lethargic,  and almost incoherent.  After dialysis, he went straight to the hospital for a 3 night stay.  He's now on antibiotics.  I hope he can recover!  The local Health Dept. web site indicates that people on dialysis are susceptible to MRSA.  Universal precautions are encouraged to prevent the spread of the disease.  Has anyone else here experienced MRSA?  What can you tell me about it and what advice can you give me?  Did it ever go away or did you ever feel any better?

Hi happykuffy,
I don't have any direct experience with MRSA but I have heard that it is especially tough on dialysis patients and people who are immuno-suppressed.
If anyone is interested in reading more go to: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar_mrsa_ca_public.html#6
What surprised me is that it can simply look like a pimple or boil and can be red, swollen and painful.
I can imagine that many people might try to self-treat something like this, and there's a danger of waiting until it's too late for treatment.
It sounds like you dad is getting good treatment and I pray he is feeling better soon.
All the best,
Karol

I'm 65 and I recovered from MSRA in November.  It took a week in the hospital but I got out in time for my son's wedding in Vegas.
