Title: Work called
Post by: kitkatz on May 22, 2007, 11:01:01 AM
So here I am taking a day off of work and human resources (the people who hire and fire) calls me. They want a meeting with me at eleven oclock on Thursday. I asked them if they were going to provide a substitute teacher for me? She said "Well then you don't want to meet?" Isaid "Yes I would like to meet with you all. However I am in the classroom at this time and will need a sub to take over the classroom." She says:  "Well I will get back to you and see if we can reschedule it."

Ummmmm. Duh!  Think about it first, then call me with a reasonable time.  I am obviously a teacher in the classroom in the middle of the day. Sheez! :sarcasm;    Is it just me or did they not think this through?

This is all because I am trying to do a four day work week. I thought this was all settled already. My principal said it was. By the time they meet with me the school year is going to be over already. I am already willing to take the pay decrease they are going to make me take.  So no big deal.

And they wonder why I am so tired!

Hang in there baby! It's kind of like putting the cooking directions on the bottom of the package, and when you read them they say not to turn the package upside down.

"Here's your sign!"   :banghead;  What idiots.

Are you wanting to get a 4 day work week for next school year, or just what's left of this year?

Why do these people want to talk me to death! I am tired and cranky already. I have been a good employee for eleven years for them.   I will get a lawyer if they mess with me.

 :grouphug; (we need a smiley with a big stick)  Hang in there and save the lawyer threat until all other avenues have been exhausted.  Then don't just threaten; have one lined up, waiting in the wings, just hoping he will get a chance to sue.   :boxing; :popcorn;

BTW, my friend has a 185 day contract (that she has already worked) which will end on Aug 14; her new contract starts Aug 15.  She got an email two days before school was out, asking her to come back, the week before her new contract starts for "home visits", at $50 a day - less than minimum wage because in order to get 40 visits done in 5 days they'll have to work 10 to 11 hour days.  These are "home visits" the country official forgot to schedule during the first week of the new contract year.  They forgot that federal law requires the "home visits" for the K4 kids, and they already scheduled the K4 kids to be in class the first week!  IOW, they screwed up the schedule and expect her to use the last week of her vacation to "fix" it, and they want to pay her peanuts to do it.

She told them her contract is for 185 days.  She already worked 185 days, and she already has plans for the last week of her vacation.  Her husband is hoping they won't take "No." for an answer.  She already has enough documentation to file suit over harassment, sexual harassment, and discrimination, and he's hoping for the final straw to make it really financially worth while for an attorney to take the case, and betting the Dept of Ed doesn't want the hassle, expense and bad publicity of a suit.  She's just hoping to work for a couple of more years until she can retire.

KitKatz - I do understand what you are going thru.  My school talks about how much they support me, but want me to work only 2 or 3 days because of my health.  They made the decision for me without talking about it with me.  So the school  year has ended -- and no new contract has been presented. After 18 years there, I am having a hard time dealing with this treatment.  Don't know what I am going to do. I love my job; love the kids---don't care the board who seems to be the ones upset with my disease. I still work harder than half the people there, but not quite as much as I use to.  I am rambling -- I worry about this everyday! There are days I wonder if it was a more visible disease, would they be treating me this way?   You look good-- You don't look sick-------sound familiar?

Most teachers enjoy the kids and hate the idiocy of the bureaucracy.   Anyone who has to deal with any facet of the Department of Education has my sympathy.

Be sure to read the American with Disabilities Act so you are prepared if they give you any crap.  http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/adahom1.htm

in 2001 I was fired from my job for "being unreliable" after I got called for transplant (that didn't happen BTW). On my release papers the boss wrote "on peritoneal dialysis, unable to job"....well, guess what I did...with a little help from my husband I went straight to the Human Rights people and sued her fat ass!!
It took some time (2 yrs) but I got much satisfaction and didn't have to pay for a lawyer. It was straight out discrimination against someone with a disability.... :beer1;

Oh Yeah, they are being very careful to go by the letter of the law with me and the ADA act. Hehehehe!

I voluntarily took a disability retirement.  I didn't want to be the dead weight in the office.  I'm too hard on people who don't show up for work or take 2 hour lunches.  So, I got out while I still had a good reputation.

I miss the money but I just couldn't do the job the way I wanted it done so I left.

I admire you guys who hang in there.  I don't know how you do it!                           :bow;

I would do better if I divorced my husband. I don't get any benefit if I left work and we need the money. If I was divorced i would get a truck load of assistance. I am also a home dialysis patient and I don't get any thanks for that either. It actually costs me more to be a home patient. I wish the powers to be would think a little harder and help those who try to help themselves.   :banghead;

Yep that's  confusing, a good looking sick person is hard to accept in most work environments. :banghead;

I have had so many problems of late but my work has been terrific.  After all your service Kit they should give you four days work for your full pay that you are getting now.  Noone at your school will appreciate how hard it is to live with your problem until they get a life-threatening health problem themselves.  My boss is absolutely terrific and he knows that when I can work I do work and I give a hundred percent so he is very loyal to me.  I have only been working there just over a year.  Your school should be ashamed about not supporting you more.  I think just by talking to you on here that you are doing a terrific job and you are giving it your all.  I wish they would treat you accordingly.

I did too.  I just wasn't capable of doing the job the way I once did.  It was sad, but it was for the best for everyone concerned.
