Title: reactions to dialysis
Post by: grumpygramp on March 05, 2006, 11:04:37 AM
I have been on hemo for almost three years and have a problem that makes me want to quit.Every time  i take a treatment i get  this feeling that can only be described as bee stings..It gets worse as the day goes on and by bedtime is almost impossible to handle. My wife found an article that said it could be an adverse reaction to something with the machine or filter but of course the staff and drs. dont listen.Take benedryl and be quiet and tell your wife she reads to much.We know what we're doing.has any one had an experience  like this?
I do know it has me thinking this whole thing over and if it wasn't for my family i would quit.

Hi, we need a little more info:

Where are the "bee stings"?
When exactly does the feeling start?
What's your "Calcium" usually?
Does it stop the next day by the time you wake up?

The stings are all over my body--in my eyes my nose -everywhere.First the dr checked ionized calcium--o.k.Then he said high phosphorous but even when my labs are good i still have this.  The day after treatment it gradually gets better and the next day when i go in i feel good but by the time we get home(30miles)it has started and gets really bad in a few hrs.On weekends i really feel good on sun but its time to go back. Also my face gets very flushed and i get hoarse--sometimes it takes a couple of hrs to get my voice back. This is so frustrating when nobody listens.   love the web site.We needed it.Thank you.

Have you every had Thyroid problems?
Do your know your TSH levels?
Do they reuse your Dialyizer?

If it were Phosphorus it would be "itching" not stinging.

Grumpygramp,

Welcome to our site.  Yes, this is the place to ask questions and vent.  We would like to know more about you.  I'm a little behind on reading posts, but I don't think you went to the "Introduce Yourself" and told us a little about yourself.  I take it you are a grandfather?  :)

Interesting side effect.  I don't have stinging yet, but let's see what some of our members have to say.

I had an allergic reaction to either the polyfill in the reuse dialyzers or the renalyn.  I felt terrible and my lymph glands swelled up like I had lymphoma.  That was a year!  Have them take you off of reuse dialyzers and off polyfill dialyzers and see if it helps the allergy.
