If you weren't vegetarian, I would tell you that you HAVE to try it. There is this French restaurant over here 'Le Cabanon' that has it as an appetizer! Absolutely great! Whenever I go to St.Martin (French island) I must have some (it's cheaper there). They do it with garlic and parsley. Just scrumptious!!!

Do you find it takes the average westerner a while to get past the "yuck" factor before they will try it? I'm trying to be open-minded about it myself, but all I can do is shudder at the thought of eating what is, effectively, snails!! :-\

So tell me Krisna, are you a current dialysis patient, or do you have a transplant? Have you had a transplant or transplants in the past? From 1979 is such a long time to have ESRD.
I'm on dialysis! But I have had transplants! I have been a patient a long time! And I was lucky enough to have Dr. Robert Hickman as my very first Nephrologist! And I know what a Scribner Shunt is! lol
I posted all abt me and my transplants in the introduction section and also posted a newspaper article abt my first transplant when I was eight. But here's the short list...
Nov. 1979 Diagnosed with ESRD after going into congestive heart failure - age 7
Jan. 1980 start hemodialysis (which only uses acid at that time) - age 8
Feb. 27, 1980 Five antigen transplant from father - age 8
Sept. 1988 Return to hemodialysis - age 16
Feb. 4, 1989 Six antigen cadaveric perfect match - age 17
Jan. 1994 Return to dialysis - age 22
Oct. 18, 1996 Six antigen cadaveric perfect match - age 24
Nov. 15, 1996 emergency surgery to repair aneurysm in kidney's artery which was spotted on ultra sound
Dec. 20, 1996 emergency surgery to repair another aneurysm in the kidney's artery. Kidney is found to be infected and if removed. The infection has spread down the artery in my right leg and the artery is tied off until it can be bypassed at a later date.
Spring 1997 arterial bypass surgery to restore arterial blood flow to my right leg. - age 25
July 29, 1998 Six antigen cadaveric perfect match (ultra sound tech decides to check on things just in case because he remembers me from last time) As I'm waking up I hear, "There's a problem with the kidney, we have to take you back to the OR." I find out later that the kidney had rolled onto its artery and cut off blood supply. It's damaged but still works. It wasted everything like fluid and vitamins. - age 26
Sept. 6, 2002 Return to dialysis - age 30
Dec. 7, 2002 Call 9-1-1 with sudden onset of severe abdominal pain. I cannot get up off the couch! I request and get the Medics. Turns out my sm. intestine has become tangled in scar tissue and strangled itself, then leaked out into my body. My potassium level is sky high. I think it was something like 12 or higher. At first they think I missed dialysis but hubby tells them no I didn't miss it and I got my entire treatment and I don't eat too much potassium. They determine its from the leak. They dialyzed me and give me IV meds to fool my body into thinking it's normal! Outlook is not good. The surgeon sleeps in the OR waiting for my potassium to get low enough. Surgery is performed, during which my heart stops for appr. 12 minutes! Surgeon goes and tells my family that she doesn't think I will survive. My heart stops beating three more times! I am in a coma for almost a week. My sisters and my grandmother all come home surgeons don't think I will make it! My little sister gets mad at our dad for calling funeral homes. She wasn't there when the doctor said I probably wasn't gonna make it!
-
Wow... your one lucky person to have so many perfect match transplants.... unfortunately, you had so many problems, and that last time, sounds terrifying.. so glad your here with us today. :cuddle;

Wasn't my time, I guess! It was hard to recover from, I was in ICU for like two months. I had to use a wheelchair and a walker for a long time but I eventually recovered! My nephrologist calls me his miracle patient!
And, I also messed transplant #2 up by not taking my meds like I was supposed to and drinking a lot. But I was young and had a bad home life! Learned a hard lesson!
-
Ooops, guess I should have read the introduction section, but thank you for filling me in on all of that, it is great to read, although very moving and sad that you have been through so much - however, you're in the right place!

You should read the newspaper clipping I posted in the transplant stories section. There is a pic of me and my dad who gave me one of his kidneys when I was eight.

First name: Marsha
Nickname (irl) Pete (childhood nickname that has stuck all these years -- all my mom's family calls me this), or Petey (Mom calls me this -- always has and probably always will)
Location (be a bit specific): Clarkton, North Carolina (a little, tiny town -- two stoplights -- in southeastern NC); this is where Marvin grew up and has lived for 52 years; we live five miles from the house where he was born and raised.
Age: 45
YOUR RENAL STATUS: wife to Marvin (13-year hemo dialysis patient, currently on home hemo)
What you do for a living: high school English and Journalism teacher (20 years now); before that, newspaper reporter/photographer (5 years)
What you want to do for a living: Before all of Marvin's troubles, I dreamed about being a professional novelist. Since ESRD hit us, I've seriously considered going back to school one day to be a dialysis nurse.
Relationship status: married to the love of my life and the finest man who has ever lived, Marvin, for 22 years (he's really cute, too!)
Siblings: one sister (2 years older) and one brother (one year older)
Pets: one dog who thinks he's human -- Hop-Sing (a pug/pekingese mix who worships me and is worshipped by me)
Three bands you would consider to be your favorite: I can only list three? That sucks because I could go on forever. Here's a start (can't do just bands, though, has to be musicians) ... Meatloaf, Rod Stewart, Toby Keith, Barry Mannilow, Chicago, Eagles, Temptations, Statler Brothers, Dolly Parton, etc.
Places you have travelled overseas, if any: overseas -- France, Newfoundland; in US -- all up and down the East Coast (and even in the midwest some) because my dad was in the military until I was 16 (U.S. Coast Guard)
Sport(s) you play, if any: have coached volleyball, softball, and basketball on the high school and middle school levels (don't any more -- those days are over) ; have also coached youth baseball for 22 years (last year, I had a five-, six-, and seven-year-old team -- it was so much fun... I loved working with those "babies," and we went undefeated and advanced to the regional tournament)
Sports team(s) you support: Cincinnati Reds
What you would/did name your first born child: Marvin and I couldn't have children. This is the only sad thing that has happened to us in our marriage. My only "baby" is Hop-Sing (when we found out we were getting him, my mom -- who doesn't really like dogs -- suggested we pick a Chinese name because Pugs and Pekes are both originally from China. I couldn't think of any Chinese names. Marvin said he watched "Bonanza" as a little boy and they had a Chinese cook named "Hop-Sing." So, that's what we named him. My mom was not impressed.)
Worst injury you've had: I've been pretty lucky -- no real injuries
Drink/Smoke?: Don't drink, have smoked since I was 15 -- want to quit one day, just not today
What time do you usually go to bed/wake up: Bed 10:00, Wake up 5:00
Favorite colour: pink, pink, pink, pink, pink, or pink; second choice is pink, too!
Favorite food: shrimp
Favorite alcoholic drink: Don't drink -- haven't since college (but have seriously considered taking it up again)
Why people like you: I'm easy to talk to and like meeting new people; I like people for who they are and don't consider race, socioeconomic status, disability, or religious affliation (or lack thereof); I can find "something good" in everyone I meet; I am sincere and not a fake; I like to help people; I always, always pull for the "underdog."
What people dislike about you: I have been told (by Marvin's home hemodialysis nurse) that I am "intimidating" because I'm intelligent, pro-active, and pushy -- especially where Marvin is concerned; I'm also opinionated, out-spoken, and domineering; I don't usually take "No" for an answer; I can also be stubborn, honest (to a fault), and loud. I've been called "aggressive" and, on more than one hundred occasions, a "b*tch." If you mess with my family or my dog, I'll fight you in a heartbeat...but, if you mess with my Marvin, you might as well pick out your burial plot. Your days are numbered, and I will get you.
Best achievement in life: I was a LURD (living, unrelated donor) when I gave Marvin one of my kidneys on July 26, 2000. The doctors said it wouldn't work because we weren't a good "match," but I kept after them for over five years. The kidney "worked" but, after three years and three months, it contracted the same disease that destroyed his original kidneys and he had to go back on dialysis. This was, by far, the most important thing I've ever done in my life. It was an absolutely wonderful experience for me, and I would do it again -- tomorrow and with my remaining kidney. I thought that this act was something that would only benefit Marvin, but it did an awful lot for me, too. Through it, I realized my purpose in life and it enriched my soul tremendously.
Why you belong to this forum: You have "walked a mile in my shoes." You know where I've been, where I am now, and where I'm going. You don't judge me, and you let me be me. You show concern for my Marvin (which makes me love you with every ounce of my being).

My kids were babies..and.. well in went the nail and i thought.. hey.. at least i didnt faint out there on more garbage buried in that grass!!.. :yahoo;

Where have you been all my life? We are so similar that it ain't funny.
I probably had my nose in a book and you didn't notice me. Although from the picture on your posts, we might have met in Arkansas where I spent summers as a kid or maybe at a peace rally in '69...
-
Been to Hot Springs a few times, used to fish at at Table Rock, was in college in '69 but playing football instead of peace rallies. Now I read more and try to forget the old days. I still listen to the same music and wonder how I ever survived. Dialysis is a piece of cake compared to the '60's.

And, to hear that I am not alone. I would also hope that if I am here long enough, I will be able to give back to those who follow behind me. For now, its purely selfish that I have joined this group, with the intent to develop my coping mechanisms.

I've been on dialysis for 4 months. I didn't know anything was wrong with my kidneys until I got a pain in my ribs that wouldn't go away. I've been trying to adjust to this situation since then. I am also taking chemo for multiple myloma.this has been very hard.. My husband and my daughter have been taking care of me which is hard on them. I'm getting stronger and taking care of my self. Family is still taking me back and forth to dialysis and chemo.I hope to be able to go to home dialysis soon. They are trying to make buttonholes in my arm now. I don't know how long it takes for this. My husband is very grouchy all the time I think this is to hard on him and it changed his whole life. Now I can't go anywhere anymore. I hope this will get better.if you have any suggestions let me know.

Nov. 1979 Diagnosed with ESRD after going into congestive heart failure (age 7)
Jan. 1980 start hemodialysis (which only uses acid at that time) (age 8)
Feb. 27, 1980 Five antigen transplant from father (age 8)
Sept. 1988 Return to hemodialysis (age 16)
Feb. 4, 1989 Six antigen cadaveric perfect match (age 17)
Jan. 1994 Return to dialysis (age 22)
Oct. 18, 1996 Six antigen cadaveric perfect match (age 24)
(age 25)
It's damaged but works. It wasted everything like fluid and vitamins. (age 26)
Sept. 6, 2002 Return to dialysis (age 30)

My update:
In November 2018 I was called to receive my special gift, my kidney-transplant and right now I am (still) very slowly recovering from the operation and I also try to get used to the "heavy" medication (no side-effects as such, but extremely tiring and I feel totally exhausted), but nevertheless, I can already notice the good results of having a working kidney and hopefully I soon can get back to my usual self again. Nevertheless, I am extremely grateful for the gift of a perfectly "fitting" and working kidney transplant. :grouphug;

Many thanks okarol for your lovely comment, it is very much appreciated. Fortunately my body and my thinking both are noticeably getting better after the transplant-operation and I am enjoying it very much, even though I have to go for "walkies" to the bathroom not only during the day but all through the night as well, but that is understandable, since I have to drink water "like a fish" and yesterday - for the first time - I drank almost 3 and a half liters of water with two cups of coffee "thrown in as well" ... :bow;
Thanks again from Kristina and I do hope, Jenna and all of your family are doing well? :grouphug;
