My hair is falling out by the handfulls! :(
I'm thinking about going to get a wig. What is left is so damaged that it looks awful and won't even hold a curl.
I know the MEN on this site may not have this problem, but am I the only BALD woman here???
GEEZ you'd think I was on chemo, not Hemo!
THAT is another thing...... is it "hemo" or "haemo" I pronounce it HE...Mo not Hey....Mo?? ???

In the states we pronounce it "Hemo" and in the UK it is pronounced "Haemo". I think the "a" is silent when they say it so they say it the same way as us.

My hair was falling out too! I was using Heprin when on the machine and there are a few women who have the same reaction. Now I use Fragmin instead. I inject it into the lines at the start of dialysis. Do you use Heprin? Maybe you are having a reaction too. Liz :)

I had a reaction to Heparin also... I use Danaparoid now... My hair is so fine, losing it made it even worse... Hope you get it figured out.. :-\ :o :)

You are right, Epoman. 'Hemo' is American and 'Haemo' is British, but they are both pronounced the same way - heemo.

Who cares how Haemo/Hemo are spelt, both words mean the same. ::) . Are you still on Heparin Rerun, that is one reason why your hair could be falling out. Mine started to fall out, so I got changed to Fragmin which stays in the body a lot less than Heparin. My lines are still locked with Heparin. But that never gets into my body. At least my hair stopped falling out. (For Now :-\ ) There are drugs that you could be on, or stress of being on haemo. there are so many reasons for hair lose. >:(

Lacking Zinc can also contribute to hair loss... I take a supplement.. 8)

I'll ask about zinc. I've also heard that low protein will affect your hair.

I would be the last person to describe my hair that way... I hate my hair!!!
It is fine.. and straight as a poker.... permed the hell out of it for years!!!
But, altho turning grey..it is not falling out anymore.. it's ok.. but not the head of curls

But a bit more serious now, it did work for me. After a couple of weeks my hair stopped falling out. Or should I say, stopped wash and go down the plug hole! ;D

I bought a WIG today! ;D I look HOT! ;)
It is my same hair color (Spring Honey) and I don't have to fix it every morning. I do have to admit that it is hot and itchy. But, I look so much better. My hair has gotten SO thin that I look like I have Cancer and not Kidney Failure~!
I'm starting to look more and more like the picture to your left! >:D

Hey, Rerun, Congrats!
My sis had cancer last year and instead of waiting for her hair to fall our in hunks, she asked me to shave it (one of the hardest things I ever had to do) She had a type of skull cap that kept her wig in place and kept the itching to a minimun and yet let her head breathe. There was a great program for the cancer patients here through a beauty salon where they could try different wigs and wear them as long as they wished. Could also get them cleaned/ styled weekly- great concept! Best of luck with your new crowning glory!

My hair started to drop out when I was on load of antibiotics due to complications to stuff. The hair would come out in handfulls. I was a litle worried. The doc says it happens.
Say doc, It is not your friggin hair here. It's mine!

I had a beautiufl head of dark brown hair that was just slightly receding (like most guys) in the front, but at least the skull wasn't showing through.
A friend of mine who's also on Dialysis suggested Nioxin. You can get it at most Supercuts location and it adds to the thickness on the top of my head where I was losing most of my hair.
Thanks to everybody's suggestions about the heparin question. I had no idea that that's what was causing the hair loss (although the doctor said that the high amounts of protein my blood would cause hair loss too) but I'll ask about an alternative to heparin.
I'm not the kind of guy who can shave his head and look good. It's just not going to happen.

I use Nioxin; the cleanser, conditioner, spray, and I was taking the vitamins until the Nephrologist said to stop them. Still my hair keeps getting thinner. But, thanks for the encouragement. I'll keep using Nioxin and maybe it will kick in. :)

I experianced hair loss on Haemo, Ill call it Hemo for all you lovely americans,, I am only 25 and my hair Got so thin you could see my baldy head through my hair, my consultant was excellent appart from when I shared problems such as sudden inability to get erections and oh by the way my hair is falling out, He just smiled and said see you next time, good news my hair grew back, we were praying like mad and not doing anything else so i guess God did it, also I got my sex life back, that was God too, whoppee God....

My hair fell out drastically before I even knew my transplant was failing. Must of been the stress of a horrible subject at uni :-\
I had really long mega thick hair. After 12 months I finally decided it had to come off. I cut it all off and have kept it short ever since. I get it trimmed and treated regularly at the hairdresser and it has got a little bit thicker and healthier. It goes through stages of falling out, and thickening up. Who knows why. I wish we could grow us all some kidneys, as well as hair.
As for sex....whats that???

Jenna's thick hair started falling out after about 6 moths of hemo - it was everywhere - scared the hell out of me and the techs would say things like "Oh I never heard of that happening before." WTF?? Finally a dialysis nurse said it's not unusual, probably due to the stress of hemo (like the renal failure wasn't stressful enough?? No hair loss during that!) Anyway, she used Nioxin shampoo and conditioner, and it may have helped. Eventually she grew back all the hair, but it seemed to take forever.

I noticed hair loss for the last 4 years that Ive been on dialysis. I thought it was just from the stress of dialysis, but I haven't really cared too much because my hair grows so fast that there is no noticeable difference but it is on my pillow every morning. So it could be heparin? Ive always wondered about that.. I think my hair would be too thick if It wasn't falling out from dialysis ...LoL

My hair has been falling off in clumps. I cut it really short now because of the endless tangles. I hope I don't end up bald! :stressed;

I use Nioxin too, but, as yet another precaution, a once a week shampoo with Paul Mitchell cleansing shampoo helps a bunch. This is under the theory of, you take all these meds ( and God knows, we do ) and some of it goes into your hair, where it is not needed. The shampoo is what you would use if you swam every day in a chlorine pool and the chlorine got into your hair.

Ever since being on dialysis, I've noticed hair loss. Wasn't that bad when I first started PD, but over the years and switching over to hemo, I lost alot of hair. I'm at the point now that I have non existent eyebrows (like Guynan from Star Trek), and everytime I washed my hair I had strands of it in my hands.

I'm on PD and my hair is just really really thin, I used to be able to have it up in a pony tail and it was full and a nice length but not it is like sad looking. It also lot a lot of its coloring but I was able to fix that by dying it a nice strawberry blonde. ;D

I also went through a terrible time losing lots of my hair as a result of the shock my body went through
when I started my dialysis-treatment over one year ago. Meanwhile - luckily - my body has calmed down a lot
and my hair-loss has stopped quite a few months ago and lots of hair has started to grow back again
and all my newly grown hair has come back blond and in curls, whereas originally my hair was always straight ...

Threads like this is why I love this forum. My hair is falling out real bad and my nurses keep poo pooing it. Meanwhile, I'm ending up with fist full every time I run my hand through my hair. I can deal with the stomach pooch and never looking good in a bikini again, but I can't handle going bald!
One thing I've found that is helping is Lush Big Shampoo. It's super voluminous so at lay my thin hair can look fuller. Dry shampoo also helps thicken the roots for a day.
