Title: Do you take a vitamin?
Post by: Sara on May 01, 2007, 11:49:20 AM
Do you see any difference in your bloodwork if you don't take it?

Iam in my 3rd week of dialysis and they have started me on a multi vitamin and folic acid, after each sessions, their reason is that vitamins are water soluble so after each dialysis session we should replace what was lost during treatment.

There may not be a big difference in blood work.

The vitamins for renal patients have limited amount of certain vitamins and more of others they need.  The big one being folic acid.  This is   because dialysis patients tend to run high homocystine levels and can lead to heart problems and the high dose folic acid in the renal caps can help reduce the homocystine levels.

I was told not to take anything like that as it would affect my blood test results and not give a true reading . Shows how different the UK is doesnt it ?

I take Nephcaps, zinc, Vit. E, and B-12.  I can't take any other multi-vitamin because the iron in them makes me throw up.  I get iron thru the machine.  I've been on them all since I started dialysis, so I don't know if they make any difference in the bloodwork. (Except for the iron, that is - I can really tell the difference when they need to give me more of that - and it shows in my hemoglobin levels as well.)

I take Dexfol, a pregnant vitamin pill. Guess I'm malnourished. Not allowed to take anything else, I asked!

I take calcium, iron, calcitrol (vit D), and replavite (a B and C vitamin for renal patients).
I know the calcium and iron make a difference, I don't eat meat so the B can only help and I just started to take calcitrol to help with my calcium absorption.
