My name is Bob. I am a 38-year-old male from Farmington, NY.  I was diagnosed with Alport Syndrome at the age of 8. Diagnosed with end-stage renal failure at the age of 14 in March of 95.  I was put on emergency hemodialysis and stayed on it for about two weeks while my peritoneal dialysis catheter healed. I had my first transplant on 2/15/96. It was a living donor from my father (very good because I’m adopted). I’m currently on the transplant list again (but not yet on dialysis) as the transplanted kidney is failing.

Hello Bob and welcome to IHD.
Your introduction is very interesting and it was very sweet of your father to donate a kidney to you and I wonder how compatible it was, since you were adopted? Or were you adopted within the family?.

You were very fortunate that your Adoptive Father was that weell matched and the Tx kidney lasted so long.

Thanks for the warm welcome.  I saw three good questions in responses I'd like to answer. For the question regarding my adoption. I have no blood relation with my adoptive family. The only thing I remember being specifically told when it was revealed my dad was a match, was that we actually share a gene.

The other two questions I'd like to answer was how long I've been on the list, and naturally how I'm feeling. I've only been on the list since August 1st this year.  I have been running out of energy faster as of late. I'm getting labs done later this morning, but my previous labs had my GFR at 18 and my creatinine was 3.8.

Although it's failing, I am proud of this kidney. Due to a complication in surgery (artery kinked), the doctors didn't think it would it would even get me through high school. It's never had my creatinine below 2.0, nor has it kept me from anemia, but otherwise it hung on pretty well.

Welcome, welcome Bob. Good to have another New Yorker here. Not me, but a long term and very respected member by the name of Zach. If he were with us, he would say look thru the posts of others and then come to the bar and have a drink with us. The bar was imaginary but we sure had a lot of fun at it.
