I have long admired John McCain, I like my hero’s that have served. Not only did the Senator serve but was the third generation of the McCain family to spend their lives serving the US. Senior was a admiral in WWII commanding of Mitchners carrier task forces. During the final months of the war he refused a transfer and stayed in command until the end then died from the illness he was suffering from. Junior whose father was a major task force commander was a sucessful submarine commander in WWII, one of the most dangerous jobs in any branch of the service, lesser men would have used their fathers position to avoid the danger. Junior eventually became CINCPAC during Vietnam. The future senator was flying A4 light attack bombers attacking the most defended air space on earth. He wasn’t flying a current airplane with all sorts of defenses or bombing from 12 miles away with current smart bombs but flew his lightly armored jet into a hail of fire time and time again until his luck ran out. Captured, tortured, he spent years in a Vietnamese pow camp. Since his father was CINCPAC he was offered a early release so he refused it unless they released his fellow POWs. He then severed in the house and senate where he was one of the few in this day and age willing to work with the opposing party in working for the betterment of this nation. I would hope the Navy has the good sense to name one of the new Ford class carriers the McCain after this family of American hero’s.

Being British I have little interest in American politics, except when it affects the UK. So I knew very little about John McCain until this morning when I heard his memorial tribute on the radio after the news. I was unaware of what a great man he was. However his life was a good example of "be careful who you associate with", because before today, if I had been pushed to make a judgment on the man, I would have gone by the one fact I did know, which was that he had asked Sarah Palin to be his running mate when he stood for president. And going by that alone my opinion of him was far from accurate, and very very far from flattering.
Sorry Senator McCain.

Strangely enough as a lifelong Democrat I was planning to vote for McCain until he picked Palin. That choice was so bad it forced me to re-examine Obama. By the time the election occurred I was a enthusiastic Obama supporter. My absolute admiration for the McCain family was still strong. While I did not like his politics I loved his dedication to his country.

Hello Michael, many thanks for this interesting write-up, which inspired me to read-up more about the McCain family and I am very impressed ! This above-board family certainly stands out and each generation has gone a long way and certainly have done their very best to serve their country ... very impressive indeed ...

I fully voted for McCain and Palin.
When she dies she will be all wonderful too. I supported them Both.
A guy from my town was in the same Hanoi Hotel with McCain.
McCain ran for president twice. You would think with all this Love and Out pouring he would have landed one of them. I'm sitting here watching all of this thinking WHY DIDN'T YOU VOTE FOR HIM THEN!!

My admiration for the senator is not because he died but for the way he lived his life, the fact his best friends in the senate were Joe Biden and Lindsey Graham show that he was not a hack. When the old women accused Obama of being a Arab in a McCain rally the senator could have used the statement to whip up the ralley but instead calmly told the women no ma’am he is a christen and a fine family man. Bottom line the McCain family is a line of patriotic individuals who have served this country with a commitment rare in this day. I may not subscribe to his politics but as a person you would be hard put to find a better more honorable man.

Trump was right and wrong at the same time. "Schroedinger Trump" so to speak. McCain was not a hero because he was captured. He was a hero because of how he comported himself in captivity. Awe inspiring. Trump should have apologized once those details were pointed out too him.
