I think within the U.S. if you count total police, jailers, prosectors, prison employees, then add in the number of inmate employed by all the prison industries, the number will shock you.
Supposedly THE #1 largest system in the U.S.. Possibly the world.
I read on of the many books investigating prison industries.

I heard somewhere (probably Radio 4 - The Today Program) that the USA is the country with the largest percentage of its population in jail.

I believe that. There are for profit jails as well who make money on the amount of inmates they have. I'm not exactly sure how they work
