Title: New Introduction
Post by: Rsbd703 on March 27, 2018, 10:11:33 AM
Hello,
My name is Jackie Fulks.  I am female, and an active 73yo. I was started on hemodialysis in July of 2017.  I am a retired registered nurse, but have little knowledge of dialysis.  My access site was was performed by a surgeon in 2012.  My problems leading up to dialysis are not the typical problems!!  My problems started as a young child with kidney problems requiring hospitalization.  In 1978 I had what was called an ilieobypass for weight loss; they no longer do this procedure!  I did well until the mid 1990's when I started passing kidney stones; side effect of the surgery.  I was passing handfuls of stones every day!!  They had just started the Lithitrypsy procedure, and they were scheduling me just about every 2 wks, thus doing severe damage to my kidneys.  In the spring of 2017 I had a bout of  pneumococcal pneumonia, which started a whole series of problems, one of which was SOB.  When it got to the point to where I was having severe breathing problems, I was hospitalized again!  What they thought was lung problems, turned out to be kidney problems!  I had a large amount of excess fluid and my BUN and Creatnine were very high and the next day they had me on dialysis!  I had fought this dialysis battle since 2012, but now, here I am, and with all kinds of questions!!!!

That all sounds so painful!  What is the "Lithitrypsy procedure"?  Sound like a new Tom Cruise movie.

Please feel free to start a new topic and to ask any questions you'd like!

Welcome to IHD!

:welcomesign;  Welcome to ihd, Jackie! You said you've been fighting the battle since 2012 but sounds like you've been very proactive in your own healthcare for a lot longer. That's great, means you're a fighter AND smart! And asking as many questions as you can will only further help you. Don't be shy. Best of luck!

:welcomesign; Jackie.  We all have our stories,  but some, like yours, are more convoluted than others.  This is a very good place for support and enlightenment.  Ask away.

Hi Jackie, and Welcome to IHD.  We have a growing 'Family' of afflicted.  This is THE best place to find answers and if you cannot find it already posted then simply post your questions and you may be surprised how many have experienced something like that already.  If not, hopefully we can help guide you to an answer.

You have quite the experience with prior kidney problems that many of use have never had, but there is a place I highly recommend  http://kidneyschool.org/  a well laid out module learning series that addresses most everything related to kidneys and Dialysis.  It took me a while to finish as I initially skipped many sections, but I did finally go back and finish them all.  Yea!

I hope to read more from you.

Take Care,

Charlie B53
