Hi. I introduced myself on Facebook yesterday, but I'm new. I will be starting dialysis in the next few months, so I'm trying to get connected with others in similar situations. I'm 41, in Burnsville (suburb of Minneapolis).

Hi Heather!
Welcome to our IHD 'Family'.
Have you looked into the Pro's and Con's of PD vs Hemo? Either method will clear the excess water and toxins from your body, you need to learn a bunch about each and how one method may fit into your lifestyle better than the other.
Myself, I started on PD and did quite well for 3 1/2 years until I must have failed to exercise caution and must have touched one of the hose fittings while getting ready for my nightly treatment. The resulting infection caused me to have my PD Cath removed and a Hemo Cath placed. I have been going into the clinic every M-W-F since last Dec. Fortunate for me, it works out fine and overall it is even less time now than while doing PD at home. So I am O.K. with this.
Take Care,

Welcome Heather.
I suggest you learn about all the modalities, even those that do not initially appeal to you. The more you know the better choices you can make.

The more you know the better choices you cam make about the type of dialysis you choose. In my case PD would mean never swimming in Yoeli lake by my house in the Adirondacks. Each treatment has advantages and disadvantages. The second best way to start this search is have your nephrologist pick a center and visit it to see the procedures and have the questions you have answered, the best place is this web site. The othe thing about starting dialysis for me was I was scared spitlless on my first day. I left the house with my reading glasses and got lost 3 times on my way to the clinic. The Nurses were wonderful and the treatment was not as bad as I had imagined. Good luck I am sure it will work out for you.

Hello heather8875. I've only been here a couple of days myself. So far so good, they have not ripped me to shreds yet, nor sacrificed me in a wicker statue, so I think it is probably safe here.

Hello Heather and welcome to IHD.
Like yourself, I also started to visit IHD whilst I was still in the pre-dialysis-stages and it helped me a lot ...
I do hope you find lots of answers to your questions and wish you best luck from Kristina. :grouphug;
