Title: Hello! I'm new...
Post by: saab27 on November 10, 2017, 11:33:57 PM
I'm married, mother of a 7 year old son, 46 year old female, type 1 diabetic, awaiting a kidney/pancreas transplant. I was under the guise of a 2 week hemodialysis trial that was to wake my kidney up and back into shape in September 2014. I was on in center dialysis until January 2015, then started(and loved)home hemo. While on that at the hospital one day my nurse thought I was having a stoke and rushed me to the ER. Well, it wasnt a stroke, it was a brain tumor that which was removed Aug 31, 2015. Continuing home hero, encountered another setback of a actual stoke march 7, 2016 following a heart attack in the same week, march 13th(while still in the hospital).

The home hemo team suggested I take a break and come in center again as my blood pressure was spiraling out of control. It turned out I had an allergic reaction to something on the machine, would have debilitating headaches, morbidly high bp and chest pains every run. I would code or end up in the ER or admitted each and every run. thus turning me to PD. It haas been my saving grace, my Hail Mary. its been 8 months total so far. Little shaky start but the bugs are worked out now I'm on the cycler.

So, Hi! Thank you for this forum and I hope to chime in on occasion. I'm an open book, ask me anything.

Hi Saab!

Welcome to our IHD Family.

Wow,, what a scary time you've had with so many near fatal experiences.  You have certainly passed many 'tests'.  I'll never understand why some people are tested such as you have been but I am certainly glad to hear that now on PD you are doing so much better.

I started on PD and did well doing manuals for my first year before getting my Cycler.  The next 2 1/2 years I did very well, UNTIL...... I must have been just a hair too UN-careful setting up for my nightly treatment.  I must have 'touched' a hose fitting on one of the bags.  Within a couple of hours I had what I thought was a drain pain.  No big deal, that happens sometimes.  But this one didn't go away.  Every drain I would wake up and the pain would be worse.  Confused, I still didn't do anything, I continued to just lay in bed.  Until the pain got so great that it made it difficult to draw in a full breath.

I very soon figured it out and went to the ER.  That was only the beginning of three months of antibiotics, which kept failing to kill off the infect, it kept returning.  I ended up needing to have my PD Cath removed and a Hemo cath placed.

The moral of this story is for you to make quite sure that your hands are CLEAN, gloved, Face Masked, and take the time to make sure your do not touch any hose fitting.   Follow your training to the letter.

Take Care,

Charlie B53

:welcomesign; Saag.  Sorry you've been through so much, happy that you're here to talk about it.  I too do PD and it is working for me.  Just as Charlie said, keep your hookups clean.
