Title: 13 days post transplant back pain and incision pain
Post by: Vivianalv on August 09, 2017, 10:26:46 AM
I received my transplant two weeks ago today and only had minor discomfort at the beginning.  During my last clinic they found my  numbers a little elevated and ended up doing a sonogram, after the sonogram I have been in pain for the past two days especially my back.   Seems like my white blood count was high so they are thinking uti but I don't have a fever or anything else.  Also my prograf level was high at 13.  Sonogram showed kidney to be ok and creatinine is at 1.2.
I'm
Concerned as not sure if pain is from the sonogram or something g else being wrong... any ideas?
I go back to clinic tomorrow , they also started me on antibiotics.

I have back pain but I've attributed it to bad posture as it shows up after I've been sitting a bit or after I do something like get al my work shirts out of the closet for cleaning. But also today I read all the paperwork of side effects for the medicines and one of the anti rejection meds did mention back pain so I'll ask them about that tomorrow.

Like you the surgery was not that painful and since returning home the incision pain has grown. They mentioned that it will get worse as the nurves regrow. I think now at four or so days before the month point I think it's becoming less painful but still there.

I take Tylenol for both pains.

I wonder if as the nerves grow back you are having muscle spasms.  Those are incredibly painful.  Also, if you are laying in the bed or sitting differently to alleviate discomfort, maybe you have a kink that needs to be worked out.  I hope you both get relief from the pain soon!  And congrats on your new kidney, Vivianalv!

What do you mean by "the incision has grown?".  Is it actually lengthening?

Me?  The quote was the incision pain has grown basically the pain or feeling of the incision has grown since I came home (but is lessening now).  Half of that is probably just the increased movement at home versus in bed at the hospital.  Plus they mentioned that the nerves start to grow back.  I still have some areas around the incision that are numb so that area probably still has some shocked nerves that don't generate feeling.

After two and a half years, I still have some mild pain and itchiness around my back surgery incision.  It is right where the waistband of most pants hits me, so I think I am just a little sensitive.  I still don't like lying on the side to sleep and don't really like people to touch it either.

Did they take a urine sample for the possible UTI? Do you still have you native kidneys?

Yes, they tested and my white blood count was a little elevated but not much that is why they started me on antibiotics but the number is getting better now but I'm still extremely uncomfortable.  The pain is now more like pulling spasms that come and go and that side just feels heavy.  creatinine is still at 1.2 and everything else is fine, no swelling, no fever nothing else !  Just feel like I'm not getting better, not worse just the same.  Hoping is just still from surgery, it will be three weeks post transplant this coming Wednesday.

Just worried !

I'm right at four weeks today and only recently has the incision started to feel more normal with out constant light pain feeling. I also don't feel the pressure from the kidney on my belly.  I do have spots on around the incision that are numb or lack feeling.

I think exercise helps and I'm try to walk about 3000 to 5000 steps around the neighborhood each day.  I miss a few days due to heat or hot weather.

Vivianalv, I am glad you got checked out.  At least you know that it probably isn't anything major if you aren't showing signs of infection or rejection.  I don't really know what to say except that I hope the pain gets better.  Be good to yourself while still pushing yourself.  That is a major surgery and it could just take time.  If you still aren't feeling any better in a week or so, I would start calling again.  Maybe get a CT scan and see how the new bean looks?  I dunno.

Thanks for your input,  labs this week showed creatinine level increased from 1.25 to 1.42 the think is the prograf as the level was at 13 so they changed the dosage.  Still feeling very uncomfortable around kidney area, I wake up ok and as the days goes by pain increases and I feel super bloated and swollen  on that side.  Staples are coming off Monday and hopefully they can do another cat scan and see what is going on.   Just seems like is taking a long time if  is all from healing!
Trying to stay positive !  Waited for this so long I just want to make sure all is ok !

Did you have a wound drain? Jenna was given one to keep fluid from collecting around the new kidney. It was in for a month, partly because she had plasmapheresis and her clotting factor was low. But they said it's not uncommon to have fluid trapped and causing pain.
