I've been a Type 1 diabetic for 38 years, and am currently 51 years old. My creatnine had been relatively stable for years ( 1.3 - 1.6), but in September of 2015, it suddenly jumped to 2.7. My kidney biopsy showed inflammation and diabetic scarring. My creatnine is now fluctuating between 3.2 and 3.8. My potassium and phosphorous are still in normal range right now, and I've begun taking procrit shots for anemia. I currently feel well, even though my GFR is around 14 - 15%. I will be going for my first visit for transplant evaluation next Wednesday. If I have to start dialysis before I can get a transplant, I have chosen PD, as I am a high school teacher and have 2 more years till I can retire. I have been visiting this site for a while now, and have found it to be quite helpful!

Welcome, I hope you get your two years dialysis free, however I started while working and worked for two years before I pulled the pin and retired. Retirement is wonderful, I only wish I could have retired at 20 when I really could have enjoyed it.

Hello, KBC! This is a great community with very supportive and knowledgeable people. I do a lot of reading and not much talking, but wanted to extend a very warm :welcomesign; .

Don't give up on making it to full retirement. I worked 3 years after starting (including a stint of in-center hemo) and only retired when I was told to come back full time or take a package (and "full time" meant 50/week + on call nights and weekends in that job); plus I was financially ready. If I was not, I would have pushed and worked the full time +. It is possible to work when on PD or HD.

Welcome to IHD. You will find loads of free information here. And it is a great place to ask questions, vent frustrations, or just pass the time.
I am surprised to learn the Dr's could determine the cause of kidney scar tissue. All they told me is my kidneys are majorly scarred. There is no hope of ever regaining function. No word on what caused it. So I am surprised and have to wonder what the difference is in scar tissue? I may be the scientist parts of my that likes to take everything apart just to see what and how it works. Or is that the little curious boy?
