What have you all heard as far as any negative/positive effects on the heart with long term hemodialysis?

Hello FailingTransplant, (... your name still makes me very sad...)
... I was told by dialysis-doctors & nurses that I must keep an eye on my daily potassium-intake at all times, because
if my potassium-level would rise, I would endanger the well-being of my heart as a result...
Best wishes from Kristina. :grouphug

I've never heard of any positive long-term effects of HD on the heart, especially in-center 3xweekly HD.

Hi FTH well, as a 20+ yr D person I have also never heard of a positive effect on the heart of any treatment lasting longterm. Negatives? Apart from LVHeart enlargement, calcification of the arteries I don't have any yet, but than I started young, and apparently that is a good thing too.

Love and luck, Cas

Wont go into details to much, as this is still on my research radar .

Consider 'high pressure artery going into low pressure vein', re: the fistula / graft.
Some will not be affected too much, some will need to be very careful regards heart things.
Depending on where the fistula / graft is , one or more heart chambers will see an enlargement.

So, not sure where it all winds up on the Good - Bad spectrum or even what to correct if needed.

But of course the heart enlargement would take many years of hemodialysis right?

Hi FailingTransplant,
Not able to give any meaningful reply here, and as I had stated, 'Wont go into details to much, as this is still on my research radar'.

Much would depend on those pesky variables we all have.
If one does not currently have a heart condition, chances are, a long life.
So with diabetes, high blood pressure, or / and heart problems , these would need correcting to lessen the severity of any heart enlargement
Also ones ambient thought process's (a whole nudder story) that do influence what happens to ones body.
(I've mentioned 'ambient thought process's' on my blog )
Wont say much here on  'ambient thought process's' as it get deep into the metaphysical aspects of beliefs.
Fact or fiction, time will tell.
