Is it true that you are no longer considered "disabled" 12 months after transplant and you automatically lose SSDI? Oy vey, another crisis! Does anyone know if other co-morbidities such as diabetes, Hep C, Epilepsy would continue to qualify someone for Disabiity? Frank's 12 months will be up next July and I cant even imagine anyone hiring him at his age and his condition, even after transplant. I would appreciate any info you folks could give. Thanks.

Not sure if this helps, but my brother had his transplant 8 years ago and received SSDI for 6 years afterwards. He had a serious car wreck coming home from D and had a head injury along with many other problems. He said the SSDI continued because of his injuries. I think he had to reapply at one point. I would make an appointment with your county Social Security office or at least call to find out what options are available. It seems to me that the epilepsy and diabetes would qualify him for continuing coverage. My brother only stopped receiving it because he finished his degree and got a good job (through schooling that they paid for). Hope it all works out. You certainly don't need anything else to worry about! :pray;

My hubby got his first transplant, living related donor, 14 years ago, due to a large number or complications and poor creatinine numbers, he was able to stay on disability the entire time of his transplant survivile. He just got his second, a cadaver, transplant, seems to be working out better than the first. He is , however , now 63 years old, so already eligible for ss, wondering how this whole thing will effect him . He still has the medical problems he had prior to the transplant, Eg: lots of extensive surgery, multiple other issues. Plus his age, who would hire him ? He hasn't worked in 14 years.

Be proactive and call SSI and SSDI offices and ask them the hard questions you have, as well as the easy ones.
