Title: What are the health requirements for a living donor?

Anyone know?  I think you have to have below a certain BMI, right?  And be free of major medical problems I'm sure.

Each medical facility has different requirements. The donor needs to be in good health. They go through alot of medical history questioning, to see what they are at risk for. They then go through blood tests, heart tests, ect..ect..ect...

My mom had to do EKG's, Echo's, Blood Tests... she smokes, always has, doesn't drink, and her heart is in excellent condition, along with her kidneys... they also do ultrasounds and such on the kidneys.

There's porbably more, but like I said every place is different.

My transplant team stressed that any signs of high blood pressure would make a donor ineligible.

You can read about the evaluation process for living donors here http://www.livingdonorsonline.org/kidney/kidney4.htm
They also have a message forum which is a good place for potential donors to ask questions.

My mother has some extra weight and high blood pressure when she donated a kidney to my sister. All went prefect!

Yes down here (oz) they seem to be a little more relaxed on the high blood pressure. I think obviously it gets taken into account, but it's not a show stopper (depending on how bad it is, of course). My sister has a little high bp, but not too bad and she is in the middle of the evaluation right now.. just got a bunch more forms for tests to do (poor thing)... but so far she seems A-OK.. obviously I'm hoping so too!

My friends hubby (my donor) went through extensive questioning regarding his past and recent health issues, they wanted to know almost the date of his last drink and so forth,  he passed all that and then he went to San Francisco to go have his other testing done.   He is in good physical condition, i am the one that is the mess :P  yes, they prefer you to be 80 kilo's or under (at least the patient needs to be)  but i was told i believe it is in Michigan that their patients can be higher than that, but hubby wont let me move to Michigan, dammit :P
