Sydney beaches close amid tsunami fears
By 7News
Sydney's beaches have been closed amid fears a tsunami sparked by a major earthquake under the Pacific Ocean could be about to strike.
The quake, measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale, hit the Solomon Islands at about 6.40am AEST on Monday.
It prompted a tsunami warning down Australia's eastern coast, from Queensland's Barrier Reef to Tasmania.
People have been warned to move away from low-lying coastal areas, and not to return to the shore if a large wave does hit.
"If a tsunami comes through, you don't go back to low-lying ground after a wave," said climatologist Dr Jonathan Nott, from James Cook University in Cairns.
"People need to stay on high ground for at least the rest of the morning. Be aware and start to plan your evacuation and get the car ready," he said.

How much of the island is in danger? We have a lot of members from Australia.

Well any one on the east coast of Australia should stay away from the coast line as a precaution. Hopefully the aleart warning will ease very soon.
The Solomons has a lot of destruction from the earthquake... our thoughts are with them. :grouphug;

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of the Solomons and our Australian members who might be affected by the tsunami - BE SAFE!
-
All people from australia please check in. Just let us know you are ok.

In Australia, beaches along the east coast were shut following the tsunami alert but have reopened after the warning was lifted. The threat to Australia has passed and no one on the east coast was affected.
Unfortunately the Solomons got all of the impact, and death toll is expected to rise. :(
Our thoughts are with them.

Just hope we learn from this, it seems yesterday was a good dress rehearsal for our country and we miserably failed. Hope they get some measures in relatively soon so we are prepared if or when this happens again.

We haven't got any early warning systems in place, they are going to put buoys out in sea, to monitor a tsunami approach. Also between federal and state government looks like there was a bit of confusion.
What Peter Beattie, the Queensland premier said
"This is not a game. The truth is, if yesterday there had been a tsunami, we would have lost lives and I'm not going to let that go," Mr Beattie said."
This article pretty much sums it all up http://news.brisbanetimes.com.au/tsunami-warning-systems-no-good-beattie/20073403-5nh.html

I feel bad for those affected in the Solomon island region but I'm glad none of our members had to go through that.
