Title: What I want to be When i Grow Up
Post by: kitkatz on March 26, 2007, 09:56:28 PM
When I was a kid I wanted to be several things.

a doctor
a cowgirl
a ranch owner

When i was 17 and 18 and making college plans I almost became a preacher or minister.

In college wanted to be an archeologist or museum curator.

Degree: BA in Anthropology

Became a special education teacher.
What in the world was I thinking?

Now it is your turn.

When I was little I wanted to farm with my daddy.

When I was in school, I wanted to be a stewardess (scared of heights...???) or a nurse.

In highschool I worked with my father to learn the dry-cleaning business. (I ran one of his shops after college)

Went to college to become a physical therapist...but...

Decided to get married and put my husband through college working at a Motorola plant and Metromail processing company then  began a family 4 years later.

Meanwhile I worked at interior design and had also managed an office and a couple of  elite shoe stores.

Went back to college after 6 years and became a nurse. (finally)

Worked as a float nurse in a hospital for a few years.

Went back to school and earned my HM- (household manager) degree.   Hired out East by a millionaire to manage his huge household (40,000 sq. ft.) , five children, 2 dogs, a cat, a gila monster, and several hermit crabs~ while hubby had the schooling to manage the estate which included several farming acres, 4 homes, all the outdoor landscaping , the pool, the ponds, the paddocks and horses and cows, as well as oversee the new construction, care for the 5 vehicles , the 3-story living-quarters for the help and the 2-million dollar beach house on the Outer Banks.

Returned to the midwest when my father developed a heart condition and went on dialysis.I went into the restaurant business with my sister.

Have done private-duty nursing and worked in a nursing home since then and am a Mary Kay Consultant now.

But...I still don't know what I want to be when I actually DO grow up!

I wanted to be just like my Dad when I was little.  I was gonna get the same types of jobs he had in this order.

1. Pizza Delivery Guy
2. Collage Radio DJ
3. Join the Air Force

Life didn't work out that way though.  I decided I wanted nothing to do with the fast food world.  Then the Air Force wouldn't take me because of some health issues I have.  After that I went to a Technical School so being a collage DJ fell through.    I went out of order a little in real life, but that was the plan when I was little.  Instead I ended up doing warehousing the majority of my working career because I could always find work.  I eventually got tired of busting my hump for next to no pay and decided I needed to do something with my life.  That's when I went to Technical School to earn a degree in electronics.  I figured i liked taking things apart and putting them back together and the world of technology is ever growing so that would suit my needs.  I wanted to get in with one of the larger healthcare biomed departments like Siemens, but you have to be the cream of the crop to get in there.  I was in the top of my class at Tech. School but still couldn't get my foot in the door.  Is what I am doing now going to be it for me???  I doubt it.  I don't see myself going anywhere with Fresenius beyond where I am now.  The higher up the technical ladder you go the more screwed you get by the company, even at the corporate level.  Besides I still have no real clue as to what I want out of life.

Who wants to grow up?  I wish I knew nothing about responsibility and I could just play all day until I wore myself out and then wake up, have a bowl of cereal (Lucky Charmes) and play some more.  All of the issues that come along with maturing suck.

However, since I can't seem to live in that dream world I became a professional cook.  Food has always been a passion of mine and what a wonderful social way to get people togeather.  Many, many good times happen when people gather around a table with food on it.

I would like to change careers at this point in my life and cook just for pleasure.  Restaurant work is just too demanding of a lifestyle.  Maybe an engineer of sorts, or a carpenter (specializing in cabinetry or custom furniture).  I know that work is also hard but the hours are not outrageous and working for myself is possible.  I have always been a hands on (blue collar) person so I guess something along those lines.  Don't know.  Taking suggestions all the time.

I will try to remember the order...

Age 5-10 Forest Ranger
Age 10-13 Prime Minester of Canada
Age 13-19 Radio Brodcaster

real life waitressed and cooked in my moms restaurant
I went back to school after I was married with 3 kids and became an instrumentation drafter
3 years ago quit that job and moved back "home" and opened a computer store.

Now what I would like to do next is become a world famous painter, I just have to learn how to paint :)

I wanted to be a pastry chef when I was little.  I spent three years after college working in the family restaurant, and making all the desserts was part of my job.  I enjoyed it a lot - it was the manager/motel maid/bartender/buskid/gol-durn-dishwasher-quit-again-so-I-have-to-scrub-the-pots part of the job, along with the 24/7 hours that I didn't like.

I considered going into early elementary education when I started college.  While I was still taking general education credits, I volunteered at the college daycare for the weekend program.  I had fun with all the kids, but knew by the end of the first month that I didn't want to do it for a living.

I learned CAD architectural drafting on the job.  I sort of fell into that, but enjoyed it so much that I'd still be doing it if I hadn't got sick.

If I have to grow up, though, I'd like to do well enough with my crafts and quilts to support myself with them.  Not likely, but fun to attempt!

I remember watching Gilliigan's Island and wishing I could live there, but without the rest of the castaways. Just my own little island populated by cats & dogs. I had a lot of social issues growing up!

When I was a teenager Quincy Adams, MD was on (hmmm. maybe I watched too much tv?). I wanted to do autopsies.

Then I wanted to be a physical anthropologist and go do exciting digs in the middle of Egypt.

In the end, I became a technical writer.

I wanted to be a teacher for the longest time when I was growing up, then I majored in art when I first started college. I switched to math, so I could be a math teacher but after being home on maternity leave with my first child, I realized I needed adult interaction in my job (as much as I love kids!)
Ended up getting a degree in graphic arts, and have been in the printing business for almost 24 years. I've done everything from customer service, production, layout, management and sales. I've been in sales for the last 12 years and I love it. It's turned out to be a good career, mostly because the owner of the company that I've worked for the last 16 years is a really great guy.

They screwed up when they made me because If I was rich I would help everyone and be like Elvis. When I made good money I used to do things like Elvis did but on a smaller scale.

When I was younger I wanted to be an architect, but somehow I ended up going to college to be a funeral director.
After 15 yrs of that (and being fired for being on PD), I am now a waitress (or server as it's properly known).
I don't want to waste the rest of my life doing that and am trying to figure out what I'd like to do for the next 25 yrs.
What I really want is to retire, with my health, so I can enjoy my life!!! But since that's not going to happen..... :banghead;

The first career I remember wanting was 1st woman in professional baseball (even at 7 and 8, I was an ardent feminist, hehehe)-- dad played semi-pro and that's where I developed a love of the game.

After I couldn't get accepted into Little League because of my gender, I focused my energy on my dancing and wanted to join the Fort Worth Ballet, but my parents didn't think it was practical.

When I graduated from high school, my intention was to become a lawyer-- in spite of getting married and having a kid. My 1st husband was in the Navy and our moving around made it difficult for me to attend college. I happily had babies while working part-time as the youngest real estate agent in South Carolina history; a QC inspector of electronics, a technical writer and a Mary Kay consultant.

When I divorced the sailor,  I did enter college-- even though I was a mother of 4 by then. I switched from computer science to English, when my  new boyfriend (future hustand) couldn't handle the competition from me in comp sci. I transferred from community college to U.C. Berkeley and completed my (useless) English degree.

Three years ago, I returned to school the year before dialysis to do a Masters in Museum Studies. I wanted to either run a museum, curate or manage a historical collection. Unfortunately, I was too sick a couple of semesters in and went on dialysis and left school. I was able to start a home business where I sold unmentionables at bridal parties. After building a successful team, I quit when I started having problems with my transplant. Oh, and I became an social services Eligibility Worker, in there, too.  I just started up (March 2007) a new home business with www.homeinteriors.com

This semester I started school up again, but this time in a Library and Information Science program. My thinking is that I'm probably not going to live very long and I need to make the most of my time-- and becoming a corporate librarian would mean big bucks, quickly, that I can give to my sons so that they can reach their dreams.  If time wasn't of the essence, I'd probably settle into being an archivist, working with historical collections. But for now, I need to make some moolah.

If the library/info sci thing doesn't work out though, I am going to run a dialysis center brothel...hehehe... we might as well do something useful with all that time with our feet in the air--  :beer1;

Interesting career path Carson.  I'm hoping not to be a customer of your former profession for quite some time if ever.  Oh...may I please have the spaghetti with sausage, breadsticks, Italian salad, and an iced tea?

I had many things in mind but none of them did I ever do not even what I majored in college and even had in mind.....

1.  Actress
2.  Model  (almost did that but was not tall enough and they wanted to do my hands and neck jewelry but I then got hurt and couldn't make the session and too late then....UGH!!!!

3.  Doctor
4.  Police Officer

Junior year in college, changed my major to math so I can be an actuary or statistician but couldn't get a job in those fields when I got out of college so I did something else instead....now in grad school to be a math teacher in middle school or high school.

Veterinarian, then marine biologist, then zoologist, then veterinarian, then zoo veterinarian, then zoologist.  Can you tell I like animals?

What I would like to be most of all is a stay at home mom/wife, with a little farm on our 10 acres.   ;D  But since there's bills to pay, I'll settle for a double major in nursing and social work and go on to save the world.   :usaflag; :canadaflag; :ausflag; :ukflag;

When I grow up I want my Heavely Father to be pleased with me and know that I love him with all my heart. I want to put off the old man and be refreshed daily with God's grace in my life.

I want to hear my Heavenly Father say to me: Well done good and faithful servant i will put you in charge of my worship service and bring more people to the knowledge of my will for them.

This is the true duty of mankind, getting to know your heavenly Father on a daily basis.

In my new life, there is love, joy, peace, and everlasting life, praising God 24hrs a day and sharing the good news with everyone.

Father God is awesome :bow; :bandance;

Great aspiration, more people (including myself) should do the same.
