Title: Question on back-eye needles
Post by: caregivertech1 on January 05, 2015, 02:19:35 PM
So, I've been using 3/5'' medisystem needles for over a month with good success. However the needles ordered (finally) by my clinic come in packages of 2. One needle with a green clamp has a back-eye. The other one in the package with a neutral color clamp does not have a back-eye. Pretty sure the 1" needles we were using before were all back-eyed. I checked the literature which recommended the back-eye for the arterial access. Shouldn't we be using back-eye needles for both arterial and venous?? Thanks.

I assume the lack of a back eye prevents the venous return needle from pushing out the back eye and on the side of the vein.

That's weird.  I use the Medisysstems  3/5 and they all came single with backeyes. I have 15 and 16 gauge.

You can get two types; a single unit back eye, and a twin pack which contains a backeye arterial needle and a non back eye venous needle.

Thanks. Any experience or research on which is the best way to go?

My buttonholes are super close, so I use the backeye on arterial and the no backeye on venous.

You can use a bavkeye in bith venous and arterial but a non back-eye only in venous, so it doesn't matter if you use single or double packs as long as you put the bavkeye in the arterial if you get the double packs.

Thanks all. I'll stick (no pun intended) to backeye on arterial and none on venous with my Medisystem 2 pack.
