Title: P'ing on PD
Post by: Charlie B53 on November 24, 2014, 04:55:39 PM

Note really a 'Rant', more like a sick observation.  Almost irritating, but I don't have any choice in it.

On PD since May 2013, so I'm over a year and a half now.  So far so good.  No infections.  I should say the worst things is the cycler beeping alarm waking me up to change positions so it can drain me more.

My only real problem is my kidneys still work, a little.  Almost a half liter a day.  That isn't the problem.  The problem is carrying 2 liters of diailysate all day, and night, squeezes on the bladder so MUCH, even a quarter cup of urine tells me that I have to GO, and right NOW.  Often, too often, beginning to leak before I can get it out, much less aimed.

I often compare my bladder to a pregnant lady.  At least they have a valid excuse.

Such is life on PD.  At least for me.

Am I the Lone Ranger here?

Do those of you also on PD and still producing urine have similar 'accidents'?

Take Care,

Charlie B

How good is your adequacy?  If you are still peeing, then that should be taken into account, and if you discuss this with your nephrologist/nurse, they may be able to adjust how much you put in.  To some extent that may depend on how big a person you are.  You don't want to be robbing your precious urine output by taking it out through dialysis, because every little bit of residual function has a big impact on the effectiveness of PD.  Definately steer away from anything stronger than yellow bags while your residual function is contributing to function,  as you don't want to damage your peritoneum unnecessarily.

While I was doing PD, I was also still making a little bit of urine - about 250cc-400cc a day. (And when I did my adequacy runs, they had me do a 24 hour collection to factor that in). I was doing overnight PD on the cycler, but I was dry during the day, so didn't have the issue you do. Hopefully someone that is filled during the day will swing by and provide some useful information. Best of luck!

I will have to remember to ask about my adequacy at my monthly meeting about the 1st.  This will be my quarterly collection month so I have to do the 24 hour urine and save that nights drain bags so they can pull labs on everything.

I was using one yellow, one green, 5 L each night and carrying the Ico all day, but since I started using the prednisone two weeks ago I've started eating and far more, gaining 15 pounds so far.  And have almost 3/8 inch swelling all around the lower half of my calves and ankles/  Nurse has me one two bags of green at night to take off a bit more water.  haven't gained any more the last two days, but I'm not losing any either.

Will have to wait and see how the next couple of months go.  I am very pleasantly surprised that the steroid has relieved a LOT of the joint pain.  I can WALK again, and open/close my hands without wincing.
