Title: Living kidney donation, what is the cut off age to donate and kidney function %?
Post by: inga on April 26, 2014, 07:42:34 PM
does anyone know what the is cutoff age to donate? also, what amount of kidney function are they looking for? our donor was rejected because he had 85% kidney function, and they said that wasn't enough. For the people who have had living donor transplants, what was the amount of kidney function your donor had? Thanks so much!

No one told us what the percentage kidney function was for my mom when she donated. We both did a 24 hour creatinine clearance. Her result was 111 and mine was 11. I don't remember the units for that measurement.

I think some places use 65 yrs old as a cutoff. Most centers will consider each case individually to see if donation is ok or not.

My dad was 4 months away from turning 67 when he donated to me, they said he had function of a 40yr old, think his gfr was 120 or 112 something like that! the age of the donor isn't important, more their health and the function. kidney works well for me With creatinine around 70. XX

O!K, so I talked with my nurse today at the transplant center and she
Said no need to worry that I would be a go
Ahead for the surgery.
Got call from my donor and she said the transplant hospital called
Her today and she needs to go back in and have another ct scan done.
The transplant hospital is 2 hrs away.
They said something about a small nodule that they found.

Has anyone heard of this? I read stories where they come up
With some bs.

I guess she is to have the ct scan done this Friday.....

Will this ever end?

I found the communication between the hospital, the donor and me was really unnerving. My donor always knew more than I did. There were a couple of small areas of concern but I felt they could turn into bigger things. The hospital is very upfront that if a donor decides they can't go through with the surgery the hospital will help them come up with a "reason" to make it easier for the donor to back out. So I think you just have to be aware of this. The shrink my donor talked to at her evaluation nearly drove her crazy, telling her she should see a therapist (shouldn't we all?). I half expected that to rear it's ugly head. Then she had a tiny kidney stone but nothing came of that either. My donor also had additional tests that it turned out had no bearing on her ability to donate but would give her more information on her health but I didn't know that. You really don't have the big picture and can't get it either. This is a very difficult time so try not to read too much into repeat tests or random bits of info. I'll be thinking of you.
