My name is Sam amd I'm a 40-something PD patient.  April 1st will be my 1 year dialysis anniversary--so far, so good (my Baxter cycler named R2D2 and I get along splendidly).  I thought it was an Aprils Fools joke when I woke up last April 1st, deathly ill and finally acceting the fact that it was time.  I had tried to avoid as long as I could but my body told me it was in charge.  In the end, I'm really happy with my dialysis--the ease and convenience of doing it at home while I sleep, getting to eat and drink more like a "normal" person and just feeling better.   I've visited this forum occasionally in the past and now I'm happy to be a member.

Hi Sam

My first year anniversary will be the end of May.  On PD at home but doing 4 manuals daily.  We have two dogs (the Boys) and two cats (the Girls), and almost every night someone wants to go outside.  Since I only exist to open doors for the Boys and Girls, I get up open the door then wait to let whomever back in.

Someday I hope to switch to the cycler, as it is still awkward breaking up the day to come in here and do an exchange.

Keep it clean and hopefully we will never have any infection.

Hi Charlie,

I have to say that I don't know how people do the exchanges throughout the day.  When I was in the hospital last August, they insist on manual exchanges versus letting me bring my cycler and it was a pain in the booty.  Hopefully, you'll be able to get a cycler, if that's what you want.  I've found it easy to deal with and convenient.  If you have to get up during the night to let one of the kids out, it's as easy as disconnecting yourself, doing what you have to do, then reconnecting--I do it all the time.  Best wishes!

Hey Sammie. So glad you are here. I am also on a night cycler (Baxter HomeChoice Pro) and I love it. I rarely disconnect in the night, but that works for me. I am thankful I can if I need to. Hope to talk with you soon.

I love the name R2D2 for your cycler... OK I'm a geek but it fits :) very cute :)

I'm glad through this horribleness of dialysis and CKD that you've found something that is working for you as well as it seems to be and  you can get on with doing things YOU want - as much as you can anyway.
