Title: Kidney Stone - need advice
Post by: WifeofDiaylsisPatient on February 21, 2014, 02:47:24 PM
Hi all,

My husband is on dialysis.  He still urinates some, maybe 2- times a day.  Two days ago he woke up in the middle of the night with severe pain on his right side.  We went to emergency and they did a CT scan and blood work.  Unfortunately, he was unable to give a urine sample (ain't that the way it goes! When you need to do it, you can't!)  The CT scan did not reveal any blockages or anything except some slight inflammation of his lower intestines.  They thought maybe he had the flu or a stomach virus.  While there he got two shots for pain and after awhile the pain subsided.  Since that time he has had off and on pain/pulsating/throbs/ down near his scrotum area and in the penis area.  He has the urge to urinate, but can't - most of the time, but he has urinated 3-4 times in the last days and a half.  This pain sensation will come and go.  My feelings are that it is a kidney stone (as I have had them) and I was told that the ureic kind do not show up on a CT scan that is not done with dye and that is maybe why they missed it.  We have a call into a urologist, but feel that we are not going to get in today.  For those of us not on dialysis we just drinks a lot of water to help flush out the stone.  So my question is, for those of you on dialysis, who have had stones, did you drink more water to help flush it out?  I think it is probably very close to coming out, and drinking more water might help...yeah, probably should call his nephrologist too.

It does symptomatically sound like kidney stone but other possibilties come to my mind . One  is diverticulitis. The nerves in the area of colon inflammation are from the same embyological basis as the urinary system so the pain is similar location and feel for both although it is more likely on left side You did say the CT showed inflammation of the lower intestine so I would be interested in having that checked out .  There is a slight chance it could be appendicitis depending on a lot of other tests. I assume they ruled it out at the ER.?  Another possibility is a urinary tract infection .
Ask your nephrologist about sodium bicarbonate to alkalize the urine. That is one way to possibly dissolve the stone if there is one. low Ph or acid urine can lead to stones. So when you talk to the nephro ask about this as it is simple .  With dialysis patients it is wise to always check with nephro obviously even with sodium bicarb.

Sorry it took so long for me to respond.  It turned out to be a kidney stone, in fact, several of them.  He passed them, and he is back to his old self for now!
