Hi Marebear, and welcome to IHD. You don't say what modality you are doing; Hemo or PD. That data point would help us form an answer for you.

I go to a DaVita in center right now. It seems I have more painful treatments than tolerable. Any tips that would help?

I am on PD at home so I am not able to answer your questions on hemo. There are many in center hemo members that I am sure will chime in.

Greetings and welcome to the site. I cramp severely when they try to pull too much fluid off. I cannot tolerate more than 3.5 kilo. As soon as they find your dry weight, it is up to you to not take in too much fluid. If they use a high sodium bath, they will load you with salt and you will be very thirsty all the time. I hope this will help.

Welcome Marebear to IHD!

No, cramping in any part of the body during hemo is not normal though leg cramping is more common when too much fluid is taken off. What astounds me is that it seems that if this has been going on since June your Clinic has been unable to do anything about this to help you?! Have they tried anything? It could be your fluid balance is all out - perhaps your dry weight is too low (ie: you may be too dry already) or something else like that is going on. Are you on any restrictions fluid wise - do they have to take off more than about 2L a treatment? You may want to look into how your fluid balance is (and there are tests they can do to get a more accurate idea of how "dry" or "wet" you are - the machine can monitor your "refill" rate and so on to see how that is going. Maybe even a UF profile may work for you to change how fluid is removed from your system. All these things should be standard to any half decent dialysis nurse/tech.

It upsets me to read you are dealing with this constantly because the "normal" treatment is usually dull and boring in the most part.. any cramping should be addressed by your staff. What do they say when you discuss this issue with them? Also how about your nephrologist?

I really hope you can get some resolution soon.

Anyway welcome to IHD! Hoping we can help you on your dialysis journey!
