Here's the interesting thing. They left both the subcutaneous and peritoneal cuffs in. The surgeon said they had a way of separating the catheter from the cuffs and studies have shown that it is easier on the patient and has a much less risk of infection and other problems.
This was done in the outpatient surgery center, but I see no reason why it could not be done in the doctors office.
This was treated just like full on outpatient surgery as far as it being in a surgery room on a surgical table with your arms strapped down and everything. You know how it is...
Once they did all the prep work and gave me a very little anesthetic (through an IV), it felt like he basically just supported the exit site with one hand and yanked the catheter out with the other hand. The actual "surgery" time, as recorded by them, was just one minute. As in 1 minute. It was literally: yank out catheter, apply bandage, send back to surgery prep room where my wife was waiting. I didn't have to go to recovery at all. I don't think the anesthetic really even had an effect on me. HE DIDN'T EVEN STITCH THE HOLE UP! Said the hole would close on its own.
The best part is: I felt zero pain! Just a little tug.
Goodbye PD catheter. I kinda miss it already. It's been a constant part of me for three years now.
