Title: This is not elementary school....DAMNIT ! ! !
Post by: tubes on March 05, 2007, 06:41:38 PM
Ok, so the dietician came in today.  Now don't get me wrong, she is a great lady.  She came around the unit today with a tv cart and a video about albumin.  I had my earphones on listening to my ipod and my hat pulled over my head.  She pushed the cart over by Tonya and I and she nudged my hand.  She asked if I was going to participate and watch the video.  I said, "NO".  So she turns on the video, the volume is cranked up so friggin loud.   I had to turn the volume on my ipod just about all the way up.  Needless to say I had a huge headache when the video was finally over. :banghead;  :banghead;  After the video makes it all around the room or close too.  She came back, by this time I was holding my sites. She asked me if I had heard enough of the video (I had my hat pulled over my face) because there was a test to take afterwards.    I said, "No, I turned the volume up on my ipod and tried to sleep".  I think I might of hurt her feelings.  Well sorry I didn't want to participate.  Anyways, after the test there was a game to play.  She had a fishing pool with a magnet on the end.  Also, an inflattable pink pool with pictures of food inside.  There was also pieces of paper with different sayings on them.  You had to fish out the stuff that was good for your albumin.  I'm guessing you had so many tries because for each good thing you fished you received $100 of play money.  After you were done fishing she came around with the "prize tray".  You could choose from a can of tuna, can of chicken, bottle of boost or a toothbrush.  whoop ti do...... ::)   She might as well of put one of each in a gift baggy and handed them out to the patients.
It was kinda sad watching the older patients and almost blind ones try to fish out of a pink pool sitting on their lap.  :'(

I guess I'm a party pooper.  Well DAMNIT, I'm not 8 yrs old.

All I know is last week MY labs were great.  So why the dietician did this....I don't know.  I think she sat in on a kindergarden class and thats how she got the idea.    :lol;   ::)

Talk about taking advantage of a captive audience.  I would have been livid.

You have every right to be upset, i think they should've took the hint that you DIDNT want to participate in the first place.  What about the patients that dont know or understand English?   Sometimes i just cant understand how our "medical Profession" works, sheeesh  :-\

Bad boy, tubes!  Go sit in the corner by the dialysis machine!   ;D

Thankfully, I've only got one nurse at my center with that kind of attitude.  She's sweet, too, but I don't need a verbal pat on the head when my fluid gains are low - I wasn't doing it to please her, after all.  She's also got a tendency to want to lecture in a "Mommy tone" while I'm crashing on the machine. "Sweetie, you really just don't seem to be able to handle a 3 kg gain.  You are going to just have to. .. blah, blah, blah."  Like I need to hear it all, let alone while my skull is caving in.

From one point of view I can see that they thought it may be an interesting way to get their point across rather than just handing over a fact sheet or something which perhaps is easy to ignore... but I too do not understand why they would bother people if they are sleeping(trying to sleep) or obviously entertaining themselves... I am glad we have no pushy types here. The dietician comes to each person and asks if it's ok to talk (well also an appointment is made, as in "she will come at 2pm Thursday..."

That has got to be one of the stupidest ideas.  No way would I participate in such a humiliating act.  Although I'm sure the purpose was to inform, someone should tell her she would achieve a better result with a different approach.  I mean, you probably shouldn't have to tell someone that grown-ups don't get the same stimulation out of kindergarden games that kindergardeners do, but she obviously needs to hear it.  Old people seem to like bingo.  Wouldn't that be more appropriate, or a crossword or word search or something?  That is of course if the person even wants to participate.  I'm like you Tubes.  Most days I'm listening to my Ipod with a hat pulled over my eyes.  Thatshould be taken as a sign.....A sign that says DO NOT DISTURB.  Please!

It probably wasn't her idea- a lot of these things are dreamed up by some Corporate yahoo and the staff has to act like it's such a great idea or they might get in trouble.

I'm sure the dietitian thought it was a great idea and was very proud of it.

I think it depends on the person and where they are at.  My husband at 74 would think it was funny and would humor her by pretending to enjoy it and teasing her about it.  When he was 40 he would have told her what she could do with that junk.

It is the same way with the gold stars on his monthly reports.  If they weren't there he would ask about it.  He feels she is doing her thing and afterward we go and ask the nurse for the print outs of his labs and do our own review and see what the trends are.

An informational session on albumin levels would be just fine, but it should be on a strictly VOLUNTARY basis.  Your right to listen to your iPod instead of the lecture should not have been questioned in any way.

Twirl, you hit the nail on the head with that one!  Adults should be treated as adults.

Well, the childish games and the fact that we are "not allowed to watch anything over PG because it might offend someone" in our center and we are all over 18 are enough to make you slap the holyhell out of whoever came up with that dumb stuff. We're not kindergarteners, if you don't like it, don't watch it. Oh, wait that's an alien concept in that place. Gotta protect the little dialysis patients from all the bad stuff that they can just go out and buy if they want it anyway. F*cking mooks.

But wait! We get kid-appropriate fare such as "The Spongebob Squarepants Movie" and "The Amazing Panda Adventure". Wow! Kiddy movies! That's the kind of drivel my 5 year old niece likes, and since my kidneys don't work right, I must like it too. After all, once your kidneys stop working, your mental age goes down to 5 or at least our social worker thinks so.
