Title: Neurological effects? i.e. anxiety, OCD
Post by: CatonTheRoof on September 21, 2013, 09:16:20 PM
Good evening my friends.

Its been a while since I last posted here.  I originally got my kidney failure on winter 2011,  was on hemodialysis for 6 months, and then since fall 2011 on peritoneal dialysis until this moment. I'm 24 now =)  and finally it looks like my mum will give me her kidney next month or such, she's currently on tests  :yahoo;

I wanted to ask if any of you, during your dialysis time has developed neurological side effects, such as confussion or worse, things such as OCD?  I have read lately that OCD seems to originate on a kidney problem as well, so that's interesting!   For a year or such, I have had OCD and sometimes it has been very strong. Whenever I think I have surpassed it.. boom!  it comes again. But well I'm doing my best.
The psychiatrist on my transplant center has said that people on  dialysis usually develop neurological things, from lack of concentration up to worse stuff that literally the brain is divided by blurred lines lol.     According to him, such problems eventually resolve or at least decrease much once one has a new healthy kidney.

I just wanted to know from the personal experience of any of you if you have had such problems?     As for me,  I have found that during morning and afternoon I can perform intellectually and physically well. But as soon as evening comes I already feel very tired, distracted, and that's also when the OCD comes.

Take care all of you =)

There can definitely be issues such as confusion, memory loss, lack of focus, etc. on dialysis. It comes from the buildup of toxins. Dialysis never removes everything. Most will get better with a transplant. I have never heard of developing OCD.
