Title: Blood Speed and Post Dialysis Bleeding
Post by: obsidianom on September 15, 2013, 01:39:44 PM
This is another thread on the issue of blood speed, but this time specifically on post dialysis bleeding.
I have noticed that there is a difference in the amount and length of time of bleeding after dialysis based on blood speed. When I slow down the blood speed a bit(360 compared to 400) I get much less bleeding and it clots quicker after dialysis.  I havent seen any studies on this but it got me thinking. It makes sense physiologogically.

Question: Do any of you out there see this also?

It certainly would have consequences if it is true in many patients.  Some of the studies I have posted show that there are changes in red cell aggregation (clotting) when the cells are going through the filter and it is effected by blood speed.  So perhaps we can see if some oy you also see this in your dialysis .
Thank you in advance for any responses.

I run my Nocturnal treatment at 450 and I take alot of Heparin.  Each site takes about 10 minutes to clot.

I run at 350 flow and use 16 ga needles to minimize scar tissue and preserve the fistula (12 years old) and use Sureseal bandages (which I purchase) which helps me clot in 5 minutes.

Where do you get the bandages and how much do they cost? I have never seen them, how do they work, what is on or in them?

SureSeals, manufacturered by FACET Technologies:

SureSealTM pressure bandages' expanding cellulose sponge, along with secure 4 sided seal, allows the bandage by design to apply pressure directly to the wound.

Effective for blood collection
- Self-expands to apply pressure to the wound
- Design helps prevent bleed-through

Sterile
- 4-sided design seals & isolates the wound from elements
- When used as instructed, creates a sterile barrier around the fistula or
   venous site

Discrete
- Clean and comfortable for the patient
- Often less messy solution than gauze and tape
- Allows patients to leave clinic with confidence

Although an over the counter product, most pharmacies have to order.  I pay around $14 for a box of Large - 100 count at COSTCO.  Can be purchased online as well, but at much higher price.  Dialysis facilities used to supply SureSeals, but they became a causality of profit maximization.

Thanks for the info. Does it work well?

My blood flow is 500 and I hold for 10 minutes.  I have not notice anything regarding the blood clots.  However, there are days when i do see some clots in the dialyizers and some days I don't.  The next time I do 450 flow, I'll check to see if there's a difference.
