Title: Visitors and time limits?
Post by: Swamp Gator on September 12, 2013, 10:47:27 AM
In our center we are limited to 1 5 minute visit every hour... Is this the standard in all centers?

What is the reason for such strict limitations?

In our center a visitor must wear protective gear. It seams like the staff would want to encourage visitors to help the time go by easier for the patients.

I welcome all thoughts and input on this subject.

We were not allowed to have visitors unless it was a very special circumstance.  DH had to stop by once to pick up something while I was on the machine and he was hustled in and out with hardly a hello and goodbye.

I am guessing that some of the issue is liability. If a visitor is not in protective gear , they could be exposed to blood and contaminated . Potentially this is a major liabilty issue with blood born disease. Also there is the issue of other patients privacy. I would also think that a lot of visistors around would make it diffcult for the staff to keep an eye on each patient with a lot of extra people around the machines.
I am not commenting on whether i agree or disagree , just these would be some of the things a center would have to take into account in our litigenous world. (too many lawyers).

Heavens to Betsy! We can have visitors any time and for as  long as they want to stay. Protective gear? Seriously??

In our center anyone in the patient area, with the exception of the patients, have to wear a gown and goggles. They are not allowed in the area during on and off times.

So if they are wearing the required protective gear, does that not cover the concerns of liability?

My pastor came to visit me and discuss a project we are starting. They took no time at all of telling him he exceeded his five minutes. I felt embarassed and really don't understand. It seems to me they would welcome visitors to help the patient pass the time and stay relaxed.

Than again most patients are treated like they don't count and no one cares how they feel...

Visitors are allowed at Frank's center to stay as long as they like. They just generally need to leave during on/off. No protective gear is necessary. I have actually been permitted to stay while Frank was being taken off once his fistula was in use, but never while his catheter was being used of course.
