Title: They are going to kill my Husband
Post by: Starr808 on August 30, 2013, 09:16:17 AM
VENT ----- My Husband got his fistula yesterday and is currently in the hospital.  He receives Dialysis M/W/F.  Well he has not gone to dialysis because there are no orders and also they wont give him his Insulin.

The doctor who did you surgery was in charge and now told the nurses they need to get a primary. He has a primary but now they can't get a hold of him.

They told him he is to be released today which means we would not get dialysis until Monday and he also has not eaten in over 24 hours.

Don't let them discharge him without dialysis IN THE HOSPITAL. They can easily do this before discharge. If he has medicare for insurance you have rights. Medicare guarantees you cant be discharged from an inpatient before you feel ready. You can threaten them with a medicare complaint.
If he isn't on Medicare you can still fight. Make NOISE about dialysis before discharge. When my wife goes inpatient I ALWAYS have them dialyse her before we go home even though we do home dialysis.
Don't put up with no for an answer. Go up the chain to the head nurse and to the hospital ombudsman while you are there and DEMAND proper treatment.  You should be calling the doctor also to ask for orders for dialysis. He blew it, don't let him off easily.

I did not know that - Thank You.  It is so hard because I am not there. I had to work today (one income house and 200K in medical bills)  He finally just got Medicare in May after lots of fighting with SSI.

He spoke to the head nurse but that did not get his anywhere. I will try to see if I can find the high up person.

There should be a patient ombudsman or patient advocate at the hospital.

Since your husband is Medicare eligible, the hospital was required to have him sign a form on admission about how to appeal an early discharge.

PLEASE READ THIS!

"If you believe you're being discharged from a hospital too soon, you have the right to immediate review by the Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) in your area."

Thank you for sharing that.  I get so lost with everything.  There is so much to learn.
