Hi everyone, My name is Alexandra although my user name is Alicat (my nickname given to me when I was at school). for years I had a lot of urine infections but my renal issues came to a head in October 2005 when I gone off food (unusual for me as I've always been a "chunky monkey") but things got serious when I couldn't even keep water down. I was rushed into hospital and the following day went on dialysis. It turned out that an undetected abscess had burst so poison was circulating around my body. I ended up with both a renal drain to drain the abscess and a nephrostomy line to keep my remaining kidney functioning. Because I had to lay on my back for a month, my Spina-bifida was screaming. If I could have slept upright I would have done as standing was the only way that I was comfortable. :) (I'm greedy I have other health issues) :D On October 10th 2007 I had my right kidney removed. Touch wood, I have only had one session of dialysis so am on an almost veggie diet to cut down my meat proteins, low sodium and low phosphate to hold off the dialysis for as long as possible. Sorry it's a long, post, I could talk for England.

Welcome from England :bump;
I too used to get called Alicat at school so we share something else in common!
Your diet impresses me, tell me more about what you actually eat?
I have often wondered IF I could stick to a veggie diet whether it would improve my blood test results long term but I always struggle to think of things to eat within the renal diet as well as cheese!!!
And I am not sure I could live without bacon! :waving;

Hi Alicat and welcome to IHD. I too hope you can be free from dialysis for a little while longer especially if you don't like sitting in g chair.
Keep up posted on your progress.

:welcomesign; alicat! You have certainly come to the right for support! It sounds like you have been through a lot, so you must be a tough cookie to sound so positive. Great job doing everything you can to keep that kidney working! Hope it continues to hold out for you for a very long time. Looking forward to hearing more about your journey. Best wishes to you!
