Some of you may already know this cuz we are friends on Facebook, but for those who aren't:
My sister was admitted to the ICU July 26th due to a bacterial infection in her blood from her previous abdominal surgery. Her heart is enlarged and her blood pressure was 58/34. Normal BP is 120/80! Not good. Jennifer just can't catch a break! Please send your prayers her way please..
Sooo...my sister is not doing so well. I wish I could update saying she's improving but unfortunately, no. They did an ultrasound on her stomach and found an abscess in her abdominal area where they had done surgery on her prior. When they did her surgery on her abdomen months ago what they SHOULD have done was put a draining tube in her after.
But NO!
Now she has to have surgery AGAIN to remove the abscess that had form due to her stomach not draining properly causing an infection and then the abscess. Shocking! I fuggin' hate Sierra View District Hospital. Everything that has happened to Jenn has been because of her surgery that they messed up on! They are looking a lawsuit.
Why?
Well it's absolutely disgusting that the general surgeon who screwed it up in the first place basically left her to fester and then somehow they stopped the nurse coming to visit and check on her wounds progress - which if she had still been on regular checks, this situation probably would have been avoided (let alone the months and months this has gone on for) then the insane situation where, from what Jen tells me, the other docs there wouldn't touch it because it was the work of the original general surgeon and they referred back to him.. then finally he admits he has no clue and suggests she goes to see some guy in Bakersfield, who then says he can't have her because yep it's the general surgeon's case..
They are all covering their butts because they don't want to get sued if more goes wrong... and then the general surgeon says she needs a bloody plastic surgeon to fix the wound? Dude, you have let this thing fester for months and infection was but a matter of time!!! And even if a plastic surgeon could fix it, then the last I heard prior to this was that the insurance was an issue as they may not pay (probably someone saw plastic surgeon and thought Jen wanted a boob or nose job!). I mean it's just a disgrace she was not monitored on a frequent basis, and all the BS with the general surgeron being so useless and inept in the first place but even when it turned out more was going on like all the crap on her intestines that the guy should have immediately got better treatment for her instead of letting it go and hoping for the best. Sadly though legal stuff and whatever isn't very important now when she's stuck where she is.
We need to focus on getting her better but I don't see that happening here at Sierra View. We have been left in the dark the entire time she's been recently admitted. "Oh, she's been moved to another room?" Thanks for telling us. This has been our time here. I hate hospitals so much and being here at Sierra View always reminds me why. They will be hearing from our lawyer.
Update to all... Dr. Dumloa has upgraded Jenn to critical. Her heart not doing well, struggling to keep b/p up and pulse way too high at 125 beats per minute. She has a major infection from the surgery site, a 6mm abcess that will be drained in the morning. A fever of 100.6 and she has not eaten since Friday. Tthere is not much to do but crochet and pray... But, I feel calm, things will get better, just a GIANT bump in the road.
She was rescheduled for surgery yesterday but the doctor took a look at Jenn and instead of casuarina further damaged decided to cancel the procedure. So now they are talking about transferring her to UCLA or St. Angus so an elite team of doctor can do what's best for her. I know Jenn is a fighter and strong but she's only ever battle partineal (sp) infections before. Now she has Sespis (infection of the blood) due to the infection at the wound site from month ago when the surgeon initial messed up. It's safe to say I'm scared! Your thoughts and prays are needed at this difficult time for my family. Thank you.

I've been reading about this on facebook. She will definitely be in my prayers. she doesn't deserve to go through all this!! just wondering..is she getting dialysis at the hospital?
-
Oh dear Lord.
Whenever I hear the word "sepsis", I shudder.
I hope they transfer her to a better hospital so that she can get more expert care.
This is just terrible news. Thanks so much for updating us. Please continue to do so.
-
This is infuriating. I am so sorry she's in this situation, it's so scary. I am not on FB so I appreciate being able to read this news, though I wish I could change the circumstance. Poor girl. Tell her to get better fast - we miss her.
-
Sending healing thoughts! This doesn't sound good. I'm so sorry. Yes, sepsis is indeed a dire situation. :grouphug;

When will they be moving her? Hopefully sooner rather than later.

The way this situation has been (mis)managed for months is a sad inditement on several aspects of the current US healthcare system as I see it - in terms of doctors getting out of their league, but not working hard enough or proactively enough to get Jen the proper treratment (and seemingly to not treat her overall medical situation vis-a-vis her kidney failure and heart condition etc as serious enough), to the lack of other doctors in the area refusing to take Jen on due to, I believe, a fear of being found liable and being sued, so passing the buck back to the origional General Surgeron who the minute he realised he was out of his depth should have gotten her to people who could deal with her properly and not wind up mentioning Plastic Surgeons and the like to sort out a chronic wound. Additionally while in the immediate aftermath of the original surgery she had a nurse come check her wound out on a regular (weekly IIRC) basis that was stopped at a certain point due to insurance (I believe) declaring it a "chronic" issue and not supporting the nurse visits, and the doctors seeming lack of interest in regular care and monitoring of the wound. If all of these aspects were managed better poor Jen would never have gotten to this point of critical in ICU with a horrible infection and the like.
And no offence to my many USA resident friends, but this kind of stuff is one of the main reasons (green card and the like aside) I will *NEVER* move to or live in the USA with my health history.
but this is not about me. This is about Jen and her prompt and proper treatment and care and that is what I am focusing on.

thanks for the updates!!
Jenn made it to ULCA. She is trying to hang in there. Feeling a bit overwhelmed though. Can't blame her!! They put a central line in her neck for meds and blood draw. CT scan coming, surgery tomorrow when all test come back.
-
It's a real-life horror story. Big :grouphug; to her.

UCLA is a great hospital, and Jennifer is young which always helps. I'm so glad she's finally getting the help she needs. Hang in there, girls!
:grouphug;

I'm so sorry Jennifer has to go through all of this pain and anxiety. Glad she's been transferee to a place where she can get the care and treatment she needs. :grouphug;

Ok, doctor came in after Jennifer's surgery this afternoon and said. Jenn had huge pus pockets hiding all over. He cut her from belly button to her chest sternum. He washed out her whole abdomin and put in 4 suction drain lines in the 4 corners of her abdomin, draining until it is clear. He says she will be here a week more, if the heart team releases her. If this infection caused her heart to enlarge, being cleaned out might make it go down. Touch and go for about 3 days or so...What makes me mad is, there was NO infection when the first surgery was done! This all started from that surgery but she is doing well. Her b/p is 87/54, heart rate 109, vitals are good. She asked for my mum and they let her come in. She is answering my mum's questions with nods so she is responding. She knows what they did and has drain lines. I think we can all breath a sigh of relief!
-
I hope the improvement continues.
-
Update...Jenn is up and talking a little, Not as much tubes and wires on her anymore. Doctor team came in, found something on remaining ovary, need to check that out. Her central line is kincked again, need to cut her neck and reset it straight. Jenn is frustrated and mad at Sierra View. She is fighting back at the stupidity. SHE now wants a lawyer!
Bad news, I'm afraid.. the kidney doctor came in. Says Jenn needs HEART and kidney transplant, but nothing till infection all gone. He is going to speak to the cardiologist transplant specialist first.
-
Glad to hear she is coming good - the heart thing sucks though.
RM, re Australian health care: I hear you, and Gregory says the same thing about ever moving to the US unless we had very good insurance. But Australian healthcare isn't free of this kind of mishap. One thing I'm starting to think is, if at all possible, avoid surgery.
-
No healthcare is free of this, I'm afraid. But all my love, and best wishes, and strength, and luck for Jen, and you, and friends and fam.

Wait--are you saying not to go through with her transplants surgery?
-
Wait--are you saying not to go through with her transplants surgery?
No way. My husband has had two transplants and is much better off for them, he far prefers the transplant life to the dialysis life even though both have their own challenges.
Moreover, I don't know much about Jennifer's situation, so I would be mad to make such a statement. No no. My comment to Richard was definitely NOT about Jenn.
So what did I mean? I guess my comment was addressed to RM's more general remarks about health systems, and I had in mind not so much the question of whether renal patients should have surgery, so much as whether anyone should have surgery as a first option. I wrote an essay about what I meant and have deleted it from this post because this thread is about you and Jenn. I've made a new thread elaborating on general remarks about surgery, which is here: http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=29438.msg464005#msg464005
I'm very sorry to have sounded like I was commenting on your sister, her situation is very distressing and it strikes me she had little choice throughout most of it.

I HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS FINALLY! Jenn was transferred to a normal hospital room. She's the strongest woman I know. :yahoo;

Lots of strange looks and hard work but WELL worth it! I have to take t one day at a time and give myself time to heal but I will bounce back.
