Title: Weight Watchers
Post by: Fatkidney on May 09, 2013, 08:38:22 AM
Hi yuns.  So it turns out my kidneys aren't the only things getting fat.  So is my booty and the rest of me.  A bunch of ladies at my work just started a Weight Watchers group.  I'm on a low-phos diet and am wondering if any of you have done WW while following the low-phos diet?  I did WW a few years ago very successfully, but that's when I could eat the whole grains and yogurt and all that.  Just looking for suggestions.  Thanks!

I thought about it several times while I was on dialysis and figured there was no way that I could have successfully followed the program while on a renal diet.  They require dairy products, whole grains, too many veggies and fruits etc.  You would get so little food for your points that it wouldn't be worth it.  This is coming from someone who lost 30 lbs. on the original points program back about 10 years ago.

Now that I am post-transplant, I have a bet with my dad that I can lose 50 lbs. between now and May 1, 2014.  I am losing now without dieting but if I hit a plateau, I'm going back to WW Online.  I won't bother with the meetings.

I lost 40 pounds on WW several years ago.  I am not sure about the low phos.  If I remember correctly, there were low point foods that were also low phos.  I think it warrants further research.  It may turn out that there aren't enough low phos choices to make the points system work.  I say go for it and see if you can make it work for you.  Sorry I'm not more help!  Let us know how it goes.  I need to shed a few pounds myself, but would also need to follow the low phos diet.  Best of luck!

I've done Weight Watcher's while on dialysis, but only until recently I've had to watch things like potassium and phosphorous (enough residual function to keep dietary restrictions at a minimum).  I would suggest going to the WW center and speaking directly with someone there about your dietary concerns and see if they have experience with someone on a renal diet.  Hopefully they could at least give you some more info before you commit to joining, or maybe even a trial period to see if it would be worth it for you.  Best of luck!
