Title: Falcons
Post by: billybags on April 15, 2013, 09:45:42 AM
If any one is interested in Falcons go to http://www.ntu.ac.uk/ecoweb/biodiversity/falcons/index.html?campaignid=falcons  We have a nest box at Nottingham Trent Uni in the  UK. its a  live web cam and the female is sitting on 3 eggs, they should be hatching at the end of the month. Last year she had 3 but only reared one. The weather was terrible, the same as this year. So fingers crossed.

That is cool BB.  Can we watch from time to time, or is that just a video?  It says "live stream".  Does that mean it is on it at all times.
I have never seen a Falcon before.  Really can't tell from this pix's, but I love to keep checking every now and then.

This is awesome!

Thanks for sharing,

lmunchkin, So glad you looked in on the Falcons. It is a live stream on 24/7 not a video. It gets really exciting when the chicks are born. Another 2 weeks or more.  The roads below are our city of Nottingham. The Falcons are nested on one of the roof tops of Nottingham 's  largest Uni. The uni is very large and is situated near and around the center of the City. The students love it because of the night life. I believe it is one of the most sort after uni's in the UK that's my opinion. So enjoy watching.

This may seem stupid, but what time is it there now BB?  Everytime I check on our feathered friends, its been dark and she is sleeping.  You can see very clearly that she is breathing.  I have never seen anything like this.  Iam so excited about this.  I love animals of all kinds, especially the rare ones!

It is 8:00 pm  here.  Nottingham must be on same time zone, you think?

God Bless,

Also munch,,, I've watched many a chicken "nest" and thats what they do..lol   sleep on those egges day and night!!  Barly get up to eat and drink.  Not real exciting till the chicks hatch but still interesting to see for sure.  I had my favorite hen sit and die on the nest as she didnt want to leave her eggs.  I didnt realize it until i lifted her up and she was so 'empty' and it was too late.  It broke my heart as i wold have brought her food and drink or bumped her off the nest to get her to eat.  Some get nestbound and i just didnt know.  Anyway, this is what you'll get for a bit im guessing :)

lmunchkin, I don't know where you live, so I can not help. Do you live in America? The time here in Nottingham UK is 10.42am. There is not much going on in the nest at the moment, the weather is also fine, bit of sunshine which makes a change after all the crap weather we have been having. They take it in turns at the moment to sit on the nest. Apparently the female just gets off to feed her self, which doesn't take long, there are an abundance of pigeons in Nottingham. When the chicks hatch he feeds her, she does not leave the nest. Looking forward to the next couple of weeks when they should hatch. Glad you are watching them.

I bet that did break your heart Boswife.  You just never knew, or else you could help.  It just wasn't meant to be, I guess!

BillyB, when you typed that it was 10:42am, it posted it at 2:49am our time.  So Im thinking you are 4 hours behind me (Nashville, Tennessee, USA).  And I think that you are 6 hrs behind Boswife who lives in Beautiful California, USA.

I wish drive time was like time zone time.  Wow, BW, I could get to you in 2hrs instead of 2days!  Never thought about that!

Well, she is doing the same thing she was doing last time I peered in on her, LAZY SLEEPING!  Can't wait till eggs hatch!!!! Then there shall be EXCITEMENT around the house!!!!

imunchkin, Apparently Thurs or Friday should see the hatching of the first egg, so fingers crossed. I know last year I could not get of the site, I was eating and drinking at the PC, I was driving my husband luppie.

I like the idea of just zumming up, like they did in Star trek, may be one day!

So glad you listed/posted for us..

and munch,,, it broke my heart and still have a piece of that with me from WAY back.  She was the coolest little banny (sp) hen that had moved from one ranch to our own ranch and raised us many a baby.  Such a sweet girl :(

This is so Cool.  She is turned to where you can see her eyes! So there has been movement of position since I last looked in.  So you are expecting Thurs or Fri for hatching?  I will make it a point to look in.  Got to keep up with the younguns!!!

BW, meant to tell you, I love the Pix's of the family.  Who are the others with you & Bo?

Hey, I just showed John your picture, and he said, "Is that me?"  God Love him, his sight is going.  I had to laugh, cause he thought that was him in wheelchair.  They do look similar!

Yea, my Grandson like yours, COMPLETES me too.  He loves coming over & really is a bright star in our lives!

P.S. Good nite.  Hope to check in on the younguns tomorrow!!!

Thats funny imunch...  bo was very much more 'harry' shortly ago..  Big ole beard, and long hair.. He got sick of it so now hes.... well, hes like you see :)
And.... i just looked at falcon... It was my coolest shot of them so far.  She/he? was standing and rearangeing the eggs (3?) and at first i thought i saw the beginnings of a hatch but it was her foot..lol   It's so fun to watch... gets sooooooooooooooo scarry though cause, well, it's nature and sometimes we may see things we dont want to see.  LOVEN it though .

Hey, where are the babies?  They still egglings?  BB, I thought you said they'd be hatched yesterday or today.  Im dissappointed you know! Guess no one knows when the younguns will come.

I wish I could watch all day.  I cant wait.  I hear a noice when I pull picture up, could that be a unit running on that building?  What is that humming noise?  Surely not the MOMMA bird!

Post by: billybags on April 28, 2013, 02:48:06 AM
Well lmunchkin , still no babies, looked in at 7.30am this morning, I was up early because I needed a cup of tea and a ciggie. I sat and watched for an hour. They did a change over, she was giving him some grieve, he had probly been on the tiles all night. Apparently while she is sitting and before they hatch she has to feed her self ,thats why they change over. Once a chick has hatched he will be feeding her and that is awsome. He just dumps a pigeon in the nest box and leaves her too it.Any way she came back and started cleaning around her, still three eggs in tack. Watching now, hubby is watching football on TV so he wont miss me. The noise you hear is manly from the street below. It is quite a busy road, we have a scenema complex, the glass building to your left and a theartre under neath where the falcons are. I will keep you posted.

I'm hooked on the falcons!  We have some sort of falcon that patrols the skies around our house, but I couldn't tell you what kind they are.  Majestic flyers, I love watching them.  Due to the time difference it's usually pretty close to dark at the nest when I can log on unless I can sneak a peek on my computer at work!  I'm really hoping they hatch this weekend while I'm off.

Post by: boswife on April 28, 2013, 07:43:06 AM
I was so excited last night (your morning) to see the switch up... Saw (her?) squawking at him and thought it so cute.  Almost shy about it.  Saw the three eggs and couldnt see any pecking going on and i dont think she would have left if there had been.  Pretty cool. Your early early mornings there are quite busy :) This was an hour or so before the 'switch' i took a peek and it was horns honking and drive noises and still dark w/sleepie head falcon.

It was fun having something to 'watch' while watching hubby not sleep  :'(

boswife . You proberbly caught all the night clubbers going home, it was Saturday night.  Uk time 18.10 still no chick but she keeps squiggling around. I have even got hubby looking in now. I think I have been on and off all day, any one would think I am waiting for a grandchild to be born. Sad person.

haha,, its so funny how 'attached' we get.  I did look over some archives and so sad how two were lost last year :(  Wonder any news on 'stormy' the one that made it.  It's so funy watching how he/she was running down the wall flapping wings 'practicing'.. Cracked me up!  I've watched our crow babies doen that up in the tree behind us.  Nature so amazing...

I've been watching, too. This morning I was up early so I got to see the other falcon come back to the nest, but he/she was not there long and left with just a few words to the mate still sitting on the eggs/chicks. (They get chatty when the other adult is there, don't they?) I woke the boys to watch and at around 8AM we saw the trade off where the one returned again and the other jumped up and was gone with very little interaction with the returning adult. They are certainly acting like new parents - don't want to miss a moment of their free time away from the responsibility of the kids.  ;D

Post by: cariad on April 29, 2013, 08:00:44 AM
Just got a good look at the chick as there were no parents in the nest. Then one of the adult falcons returned, seemed to feed the chick, then sat on it. :rofl; The boys loved it!

Right! Now I understand what the warning about seeing nature uncensored was all about. One of the parents is currently feeding the chicks something dead and *very* bloody! :P Think we'll switch to watching something else now....

Yeah, boswife, thankfully he had his back to the camera, almost like he knows kids are watching. Just watched as he ripped something to bits (again, back to camera, concealing the worst of it) but then he flew off without tidying up. His mate looked a bit miffed. The gory remains are just sitting there.

Ps.....HenryP... i was super happy that you posted your two pics.  I keep missing the ability to see that third chick.  I saw the eggshell this morn, but no one was getting up to show "me"  ;D so that was super special to me  :flower;

hahaha,, i know,,, lotta pigeons feathers around there!!  And yesterday, i just cracked up.  After 'parent' left them alone, they also left a morsel of food for them to pick on? And one of them eyeballed it, jumped on it, picked it up and pranced around with it in their mouth (it kinda looked like a head or something,, :puke; ) but anyway, i was in my 'worry' mode cause it looked like he thought he was just that cool that he was gonna jump outa their 'safty zone' area and fly  around..  It was so cute.  Then he put it down and was sorta jumping on it flapping his wings.  Guess hes learning to 'kill'.  Anyway, very interesting day with the falcons...

The weather is atrocious for them to-day, very windy, rain pelting down  and a bit of sunshine.the mother is shielding them, bless her. Yesterday I saw them being fed by both parents, two pigeons and one looked like a black bird all in one session so they are getting plenty of food.

uh oh.... its time im gonna start fearing to watch...  yep,  the little boogers are hoppen out of their 'safe place'.  One of um was on the lower leval and i watched another want to go with her.  she pulled herself up with her beak and flappen of feathers.  then went directly to look at the upper upper leval.  ohhhhhhhhh lordy, STAY PUT little ones..

Title: Re: Falcons
Post by: billybags on May 27, 2013, 11:18:19 AM
boswife, I also saw it and freaked out. When the mother came back she looked quit shocked, could not see her babies in the nest because they were all fast a sleep on the parapit thing. Had a laugh because they all jumped back up when food came. She has started to just throw the pigeons in the nest and leave them too it. This is going to be a night mare for her now because they have started to jump in and out. Last year only one chick survived and it was so funny. The parrapit thing goes all the way around the building so a good stretch and when he went walk about he got in to all sorts of trouble. He got stuck in pipping, he was jumping on and off the ledge, you had to hold your breath. The camera will usually follow them around now. I love watching them.

There's only one left!!!!!!

I checked on them about an hour ago and thought I could see the three of them.  Now there is only the one.

How long is the guttering behind the camera?

Don't panic - at least one other has returned - from the guttering I presume.  Aren't they feathering up at very different rates.

that is such a great shot!  I caught them yesterday too doing their flight practice.  One of them sure likes to sit on the edge and surly going to take off soon.  It's alone a lot.  And then, i laughted at the two (i think the sisters) others running up and down flapping wings.  One just ran w/wings straight down, and the other waited for her to get back to the nest area, and took off with her jumping flight stuff.  So beautiful.. i wish the cameras could always show them.  ohh, yesterday, they had two white birds.. kinda creepy as our neighbor has white doves that the hawks pick off at times so when i see white, i see pets..  The cameras were all over the place for a while.  I wish they would film all day and we could always see what they were doing...

Its 17-30 here and I have seen 2 of them, they are waiting to be fed. The blog says that Ernest has taken flight and has not returned to day, I saw two this morning at breakfast, they had 2 pigeons and a rat. I thought one of the ladies was going to go, she has been flapping like mad.The other lady looked on as much to say "what are you messing about at" quite funny.

And.......... the latest i see in the 'blog' was their names.  where do i look for more current update???

Henry, I am so pleased you have enjoyed them, I will have to start cleaning the house now. I feel like I have been watching for hours. I will really miss them. If we are both around next year I will let you know when they start again. That sounds aweful dos'nt it.

Im still getting shots of the kids.  on the lower left part of the screen, if you go checken, make sure you look down from the 'normal' area.  They are hangen in a little 'nook' or something as i see them peeking out from there looking up like they just landed in the wrong area.  It's so adorable because one landed up top, and the other in that little area.  They were looken up/or down at each other still being sisters i suppose.  I sure wish i could watch all of where they go.
