Title: here we go again!
Post by: billybags on March 18, 2013, 08:48:17 AM
Husband is on APD has been for 4years or more. Neph said probably  in the next 12 months they will have to think about Hemo. He frigging hates hemo, been there done that but what will be will be. Changing his dressing on his catheter site last night and the cuff thing is poking out. Does not look nice. Informed nurse who is coming to-morrow to see him. It was quite funny because we got our latest blood results this morning and they are really good, well better than they have been for a while. Has this happened to any one and what did they do.   :Kit n Stik;

Hope it turns out to be just a little blip....

According to Mum's Neph. the TenchKoff has about five of those cuffs to hold it in place, so even if one is visable, it's not really a biggie....

The only worry would be infection..... Let us know how the nurse's visit goes.....

Love...

No one knows for sure BB.  The doc maybe giving an estimated time, but not definate.  Hopefully it will not be infected.  Good luck BB.  Know Im praying for you both!

If he has to do hemo, then he will have to do it!  It is just another thing you have to do!!!  Stuff never ends, does it?

God Bless,

Just keeps commen and makes us fret over yet another thing.  Poor guy!  hope tomorrow brings something good to ya.  now that i think of it, seems that they would have just had him come in and get started with wacken that crap out of him and not letting it get any more hold on him than it already may have.  hum!!!  Well, ya got my prayers too.  Will be waiting to hear your update.  Im sure sorry.  Im in lots of 'pain' over this all myself.  Hubby is so much more on the down side of it all latly.  Makes me just sick inside, and wornout on the outside :(    :grouphug;

Well the nurse came to-day and said it is quite common and she was going to have a word with the neph this afternoon. She said they could shave it off or replace the catheter. Now I am thinking, wrongly I hope, will they say "lets give him a fistula instead of  another cath" get my point. We will have to wait and see. About   infection, that worries me because it is well sticking out. :Kit n Stik; :Kit n Stik;

lmunchkin, We have to see the neph on Thursday about the cuff ,that keeps his cath in. apparently it is quite common. Our nurse says that he will pull it a bit and then shave it off, I do not like the sound of this at all. Jank and shave, I don't know. This week is the best he has felt for months, his HB has gone up and he does not feel as tired., .We have been saying for months that some thing needs to be done about it, it has been really low 7 may be 8 so they have eventually upped his epo. He now takes 100 every 2 weeks. His appetite is a lot better as well so that helps. I know what you are saying about hemo and yes he would have to go on it when the time comes but it scares me witless because of his heart not being good. I will think about that when the time comes. Thanks for thinking about us.

BB, the trimming and pulling's minor...

I had forgotten that Mum had it done in the early part of doing PD when the TenchKoff cathether decided to 'take a little stroll'...

When Mum first went to PD, a cuff showed itself... They just gently pulled the cathether so that the next cuff down the line settled into the place the visable one was supposed to be in... Then they'll just use a scalpel to trim off the excess cuff, so it doesn't become a conduit to infection... Tube is then smooth, and ready to go back to normal... It was done in less than five minutes... Think they put her on antibiotics for a week 'Just in case'....

There are several cuffs along the cathether, so I'd just politely tell the Neph. where to go if he/she suggests changing from PD....

Hope all goes well....

Hi Darth, you were so right. We went to clinic last Friday and our neph did the dirty deed. Pulled it slightly, shaved it beautifully  and gave us some antibiotic ring things that clip around the tube. Job done. Apparently he said it was brought on by him coughing. The cardiologist had put him on Ramipril about 6 weeks ago and it made him cough some thing chronic so our neph has changed them. Hope you are keeping well.
