Title: I am new to this thing called dialysis.
Post by: cookie on January 24, 2007, 03:39:49 PM
 I would like to introduce myself.  My name is Caroline.  My husband has recently been told by his nephrologist that he needs to start dialysis.  He has lost most kidney function (about 8% left) due to diabetes. He is sixty-five, and I will be his support person through this.  He has made the decision to try peritoneal dialysis for many reasons.  It was a hard deision, and we hope he has made the right one.  I am anxious to learn from those of you who have more experience at this.  I am glad to have found this site.  We live in New England.  I hope at a future time to get my husband to post.  It is a bit much for him now.  As much as we knew this was coming someday, it still feels like a kick in the stomach when it happens.  I plan to retire next year , and we are hoping things willgo smoothly so that we will be able to travel.

hi Cookie  :welcomesign;.  I know what you mean about feeling like being kicked when you know dialysis has to start.  Hubby was told by the nephrologist in 1987 that he would need dialysis or a transplant in 2-10 years.  Well, he went 10 years right to the month.  Even though we knew it was going to happen it wasn't easy when it did.

I chose Peritoneal Dialysis as well til I no longer had a choice due to Peritonitis.  :welcomesign;

Will your husband be doing Fresenius or Baxter? There is the night time cycler which made my life so easy I didn't even mind not having a kidney! Boy wish I could do Peritoneal again lol.

Welcome to our caring and sharing community.  This is just the place for you to be.  I love to see family members and loved ones taking the initiative to do all they can to help the one with renal failure.  There is so much information here.  First of all, check out the sections that can directly help.  Do not hesitate to ask questions.  Also, when it gets a bit much, this is a good place to vent.  You see, we understand exactly what you are going through.  We even have a section where loved ones and caregivers can express their particular perspective on things.  So welcome.  Here is a hug from our group -  :grouphug;

 I submitted an indtroduction before, but I guess it did not get through.  My husband has just started on Peritoneal Dialysis. He has had a rough beginning with drain problems and an infection.  I have gained a lot by the posts on this site.  I am my husband's support person through this process which can be discouraging.  We hope thins will get better real soon !!

And when you want to rant and/or vent, there is a section which was developed especially for spouses, caregivers and loved ones.

Hi Cookie, and  :welcomesign; I am on Automated peritoneal dialysis (over night on a machine).  I first started on manual PD, but after a short time I found it difficult to maintain a nearly-normal life, but I find APD suits me better.  If after a while you find PD difficult to handle, you have this option to think about.
The good this about this site is................... Their are many Aspects to the same Problem........and, if you wait long enough you'll get them ALL here.

Good Luck,
Bill.
