Been researching touch cannulation. Does anyone here use that technique? Also wondering about using the facial scrubbers to remove most of the scabs. The research looks good, fewer infections and infiltrations. Is this standard practice now? Thanks for any input!

HI there :) And yep, we use both ;D I 'think' i see you've found homedialysorsunited??? GREAT place! or, actually, mabie you found this info on (heck cant think of the name but another of my favorite places to go for info)... Anyway, we at 'homedialysi had a webnar on this type of cannulation which really helped as i wanted to do for hubby but this helped us to go for it. I think it's the greatest ever as it lets the needle find its own way. I admit hubbies is a shallow fistula, but still, we were having some problems before this. We do use the 'scrub' as well... soooooo........... if you havent found homedialy.... give it a go as it saved me in our beginning stages of home d. http://homedialyzorsunited.org/ , if you go to where it sais "connect" check the listserve and it'll let you join a great resource there... Whats so great about it is well, for one the people :) and two, it's usually very active and you can get answers so quick.... usually ;) So much experience ready to help ya. All the best to you.. You've chosen a great modality :)

Thanks for the responses! I have been on the homedialysorsunited website. It is very helpful. I was at the store yesterday looking for the scrubbers. There are a bunch of choices lol! Would you mind telling me what kind you use so I can pick them up? Thanks!

We got ours at walmart and on the package it sais "2 exfoliating facial sponges" Little blue package. They suggest to cut in half just so as to save even more :)

Angie,
I have been using Stuart Motts method of Touch Cannulation for well over a year. It works great... I rarely have issues unless I have actually fistula problems such as stenosis. The needles slide right in the track.
I also use the scrubbing technique he has come up with. The only difference is that I use sterile 2x2's instead of an exfoliation pad that he recommends. Takes the scabs right off. Rarely have to use the tweezers anymore.
I would ask your center before you make any type of dramatic change like this first.

Thanks M3Riddler! I plan on talking to my training nurse about this when I start on March 4th. It sounds like the way to go!

Is there a video on the touch method? Where can I find it? Thanks,
Pat
