Title: Blizzard of 2013
Post by: Kitty Cat on February 09, 2013, 01:58:59 PM
I don't know how many of you have heard about our blizzard, but I can say, this is most snow I have ever seen from one storm in my lifetime!! The snow is so high that it comes up to the door handles, there has been a travel ban here in CT that was just lifted at 4 pm. I am incredibly grateful that I didn't lose power as I wouldn't be able to get to the shed for the generator, it's only 5 feet from the house!!!

Here's the funny part. I didn't believe we'd have this much snow, let's face it the weather men are wrong more than they're right, I left the shovel on the deck instead of bringing it in. What a mistake that turned out to be! So, I found if I put the step stool in the bathtub, pulled the window out in the bathroom and reached down, I could bring the shovel in the house!!! I now have a shovel!!! yay!! So now I can try to clear a bigger path for my dog rather than the tiny little path she's been able to clean out. She's a large dog, 80 pounds and tall, the snow is so deep, when she gets into an area not cleaned out, her head barely sticks up above the snow!!

Now, here's hoping it melts fairly fast. I hope anybody else in this path has been safe and sound.

oh my goodness!!!!!!!!!  i cant even imagine being in that predicament!!  As an adult, I have lived where there was 'inches' of snow, and in my youth, 3 ft of snow, but with 'others' to do the clearing out.  so WOW! im impressed!!   I hope your keeping warm, and that the job understnds, and ya can keep from cabin feaver!!  Sending  :cuddle; and  :pray; and hopes that it all works out and you 'get out' soon..   :grouphug;     oh, and that pups gets to 'go' at least a tails length from the house  :o

I am your age and grew up in CT.  Do you remember '78?  The drifts were so high we were jumping off the roof of the high school.  I called my mother who lives in Milford and she says that they got more thank 3 feet of snow.  I am so grateful I moved to southern CA.  It is chilly in the 50's but all the snow is in the surrounding mountain tops.  I can go and play in it if I like but do not have to dig out.  Most hated was the fact that you knew as soon as you shoveled out the driveway the plow would come by and plow the street snow right into your driveway.

Glad you are okay and most of all with power.

YLGuy,

I do remember the blizzard of 78 very well. I think this blizzard has outdone that one!

I did get a tiny path cleared for the dog, she certainly appreciates it!  ;)

Someday, I am going to live in a place like you do....where there is snow far enough away that if I want to be there I can, but no more surprises!! lol

boswife, I am okay, although I'm not used to being stuck in the house like this. After I cleared a tiny path for the dog, I stayed outside for a few minutes playing with her. It felt good, just to feel the wind.

I'm glad the storm is over, the road ban is lifted in the state, I'm hoping that my plow guy shows up sometime tonight, it's going to take me a good hour or better to clear off my car tomorrow, plus my goal is to get to the wood shed so I can bring in some wood that I'll truly need tomorrow.

The news is calling this a historical storm, I'd say we easily have 3-4 feet of snow total. The drifts make it higher in places.

Oh, my!

I remember some big snows when I was growing up in Maryland. The drifting was a main problem even with the snow fencing that was erected every fall.

We do get a wee bit of snow in Tennessee, but nothing like this (Except for the blizzard of '92!)

I am in Maine. I had over two feet of snow here. It took me most of the day to dig out with my tractor. Glad it was my day off from dialysis.  :snowman;

I'm waiting for my plow guy still. I've heard that some roads are still impassable, there are still very few cars out on the road.

At least the dog has created a walk around for herself on the deck. I'll be so happy when this melts and I can see my daffodils coming up, unless this has killed them.

Have a great day everybody!!

the east has sure been dumped on recently. while here in colorado we are so dry there have even been wildfires in jan and feb. it snowed a bit yesterday but not any where as much as they were predicting. we've actually had a bit of rain which usually doesn't happen till april and heralds the beginning of spring. weird all over the country.

Hope those plows come soon KC.  At least you up there you wont have the insect problems we have down south (Tenn).  We never have even good cold weather and very little snow, to keep them nasty varmits away.

I personally prefer the colder weather and the snow, but you guys are getting way more than you need for sure!

Hoping dry land cometh soon for ya!
God Bless,

Mom was out shoveling a bit earlier.  Cleo was watching her out the window. *L*  The back door is clear, but Mom opened the front door to show me, there was a drift up against the door that was higher than my knees, but then, I'm not very tall. *L*  It wasn't as bad here as it was in the States, as far as I can tell, but it's all blowing around now

I had gotten discouraged because my plow as of now still hasn't shown up. A neighbor I had never met until today, brought out his bobcat and plowed out my driveway!! Some of the neighbors told him I needed help, so he came over! My car is now dug out, so I can go to work tomorrow and spend 8 hours not thinking about this *g* but I still can't get to the woodshed. The snow is so high it comes up my thighs and I am 5 foot 7. I am hoping that my plow guy still shows up so he can snow blow a path for me.

It's funny, lately I'd been wondering if I was better off selling the house and moving because I was here alone, but after this, I am not going to do that. I've never lived in a place where the neighbors were concerned enough to ask somebody else to help me. I couldn't find that anywhere else. I thanked the man at least a thousand times, he told me where he lived, I will be sending him a thank you card also.

I have to say, back at the end of 2010, early 2011 when we ended up with feet of snow from a number of storms, we were told then it was a hundred year storm and wouldn't happen again in our life time. Well.......I guess I'm on my second life time?? This storm was called "historic proportions" guess they won't say it can't happen again!! lol!!

I remember the storms in 1992.. there were 3 storms, one right after the other.  My dad and I were stuck in Halifax because we couldn't get home.  I was in the hospital, but I was only supposed to be there  for one week.  I ended up being there for 3 weeks just because the storms happened when we would have been traveling.  I remember driving around Halifax, the snowbanks were so high, it was hard to tell that there were houses behind them.

I think that was the time they did a lot of experimenting with me simply because I was there.  They got to try some techniques that were generally used for adults on me, because I was almost the same size as the adults, and much bigger than most of the other children, because I got sick at an older age than they did.

We had over 2 feet here in Southern NH. Tony had to go and get the snow blower from his dads house and snow blow our driveway because our landlord never showed up. Well, he did, after 6pm when Tony was all done blowing the driveway, a path to the front walk and a path around the back yard so the dog could poop. Our son enjoyed it. Tony impressed me with his energy. We had to shovel our deck and front steps, but he was able to do 4+ hours of snow blowing and survive. I would hate to see what the exit site on his chest cath looks like, as I am sure it's irritated.

We've had some bad ones over the years, but this one wasn't so bad. The ice storm we had here was worse, we actually lost power for an extended period of time during that, but no power loss this time around. I can say I miss living in the city - before I moved up here I would have parked my car in the parking garage at the subway station for $5/day and let it sit there until this stuff melted. Now I actually have to clean it - yuck!

A big G'DAY to all you people who were snowed under. I know from the news the approx area that was hit but have to admit that the abbeviations of the states have left me flummoxed - CT, Southern NH? Here in inland Australia we need rain badly while the eastern coast had another January deluge. What is with it with this weather? Scary. Hope everyone is almost back to normal. It must be so cold!

Mom called the building management Sunday night because nobody had been around to plow the parking lot.  We needed to get out early Monday morning for me to get to dialysis.  A friend of mine who lives in another building a few blocks away that's run by the same people had her parking lot plowed twice, but ours wasn't touched.  I'm not sure why

Thanks for the US states abbreviations, Henry. Much appreciated. I've saved it for future reference and now just need to remember where I saved it to Never in a million years would have thought of New Hampshire for NH, I guess I'm not that familiar with the states at all.
 :waving; Stay well, always enjoy your positive input.

I hope everybody affected is finally getting dug out...my plow guy showed up today, he finished what the man with the bobcat started and gave me a path to the woodshed. I had run out of wood and couldn't get to the shed so last night was extremely cold. My kitty Rocky wondered why I wasn't making a fire last night and looked into the wood box to see what was going on!! lol!!

We have been now having spring type temperatures, so the snow melts during the day and freezes again at night. It makes getting to the car in the morning very interesting. At work too, we had to play move the cars yesterday so the lot could be properly plowed. Some of the guys are so funny and they are parking in/on the snow banks to see who can get further up the banks. Well, it'll end one day when one of them gets stuck!!

I look forward to spring, I'm hearing we have a bit more snow coming tonight, but it's nothing to worry about.

Chook, I'd seen on television that you're summer has been brutal with lack of rain, I truly hope that you get rain soon, but not the flooding type!!

Everyone, keep positive thoughts, it should only be another month or so until this silly snow disappears for about 6 months!!  :clap;

Well.....I've learned tonight that we are expecting ANOTHER 4 inches of snow on Sunday!!! Really??? The snow banks on street corners now are so incredibly high, you have to be terribly careful pulling out into traffic. I can't imagine what will happen with another round!

I have stocked up my wood box, it's also supposed to be very cold, the funny thing I noticed today is that the trees are getting ready to bud! Wonder how this snow will effect them?

All in this path, keep your fingers crossed that something happens and it blows out to sea! I will definitely do a happy dance if it somehow disappears that way   :bandance;

Luckily a lot of our snow has melted and the piles are not so high on corners anymore, but we have a child free weekend and I would really like to get some things done and NOT have to deal with sloppy roads and shoveling. Starting to loathe winter (which I do every year)

I am doing my happy dance!!!!  :bandance;  We were dusted yesterday, it melted before noon, I saw it snowing last night, it left about an inch or so, but I noticed it didn't look like any more was accumulating, I have been watching and that tiny bit we received has melted!!! This means no cleaning off the car, I can get wood in a little while with no issues,  I am so happy!!!!  :yahoo;

Further east in Connecticut, they did get about 3 inches, from what I've seen, Rhode Island is being hammered with 4+ inches of snow. That's weird, being an ocean state, they usually don't get this kind of snow, but from what I've seen, a lot of states that do get heavy snow aren't!

Enjoy your day everybody!!

Was snowing to beat the band this morning.  The roads weren't plowed, and it made slow going to get to dialysis.  Good thing it was a holiday, no idiots speeding to get to work on time
