Title: who owns my centrifuge(s)?
Post by: fearless on January 29, 2013, 12:07:14 AM
I'm on home hemo.  When I switched from Fresenius to Davita I turned in all my first equipment as I received new equipment from the new clinic.  I now have 2 centrifuges.  I tried a couple of times to arrange about returning Fresenius centrifuge, but never heard back or was asked for it.  Who paid for this?  Did I or did the clinic?  I certainly don't need two -- but what I'm really wondering is: can I trade it back to Fresenius to help pay off some of my outstanding bills?  ;D

generally speaking, they are owned by the lab. that supplies the service.  when one of my dialysis units switched labs, I had to send it back and then the new lab sent me another one.  how it is managed at Fresenius, I don't know but I suspect that it may well be the same.

thanks Amanda.  guess I'll have to push on this til someone retrieves it.  It's so wasteful for whomever to simply abandon it.

Whatever you do, do not throw it away!

Some day when someone is balancing the company's inventory they will find the paperwork and come looking for that machine.  If you don't have it they will charge you an absorbanent amount of money for it.

Fearless,

I would do your best to return them to whichever company gave them to you. You do not own them. I would think all you would have to do is take it to the clinic and drop it off at the front desk with anote who it is from and why you are returning it. It will make its way back to where it belongs.

the clinic continually didn't return my calls, finally: I was told to throw it away!
Also told: if I can't dispose of it bring it to the clinic and they will throw it away.
This is really crazy.  Any body know who I should call to find out what to do with this?  Would Medicare know?  I may have possible already been charged.   These bills are so hard to decipher.
Ugh.

Take it to the center but demand a receipt.  Better yet, write your own receipt detailing your surrender of the centrifuge and their taking responsibility of it. Have the FA or HHD nurse sign for the centrifuge. This way you can protect yourself just in case someone comes looking for it.

I spoke to someone at the clinic where the labs are done.  They said that due to health regulations they can't re-use a centrifuge that's been in someone's home.  I don't see how it would be any different that using one in a clinic for different people's blood.  But anyway, that's supposedly the straight poop on that one.  May stick it in the garage for the time being.  I been almost a year since I left that clinic.  i had a centrifuge given to me by the second clinic too.  They took that one back :)  ridiculous
