Hi there.
My mom has recently started PD at home, just about 2 weeks now. I was wondering is there a typical on general amount of fluid that is gotten off from each manual drain? The nurse calls it "UF" What are you "UF'ing?" My mom uses a 2.5 solution and fills with 2000ml of that solution then typically dwells for around 4 hours. When she first started a week ago she was getting between 2500 to 2700ml drains. Now the last few days she has only been getting back 2300ml drains pretty consistently. I was wondering is this something to be concerned about or is there some general rule for the amount a personal typically drains beyond what they put in?
Thanks for your time.

UF stands for Ultra Filtration and is the measure of the volume of toxins you take off performing PD. In your Mom's case she is putting 2000 ml in and taking 2500 off. That would give her a UF of 500 ml. I'm typically happy if I pull somewhere between 1000 ml and 1500 ml in a 24 hour period. I originally thought that wasn't quite good enough, but my PD team thinks that I'm doing ok. The other measure of how well I'm doing is my daily weight. As long as my weight stays steady, or only fluctuates a pound or 2, we are doing ok and not retaining fluid. If I see my weight jump 3-5 pounds in a 24 hour period, I know I'm retaining or losing water.
HTH - Good luck

I don't think that's anything to be concerned about unless her daily weight was increasing. She could have been pulling off more initially as she had more to lose, but if the weight is staying fairly steady that's good. Also, if she's still peeing that can affect things, too, as well as fluid intake. Some igns of fluid overload are weight gain, swelling in hands and feet (especially ankles), and generally feeling icky. If she's feeling the same, and weight is steady, I wouldn't worry.

I have found that my UF varies considerably day by day.
Here is an example of Total UF for each day of one week, 106, 231, 396, 340, 346, 95 & 371.
By the way, the day with a UF of 340 ml I peed 3400 ml.
I have found that the UF depends on my fluid intake and how much salt I eat. Very rarely will I eat something with high salt, but it does happen. I do try to drink a lot of water since I am peeing so much out.
