It's so hot in Australia that they have had to add two new colours to the weather temperature map. It now goes up to 54 degrees Celsius (129.2 Fahrenheit). I used to have a feeling of dread when the dark, dark brown crept over the country. Now the brown is being overtaken by purple, with the promise of dark pink to come.
Major fire danger in NSW where my son and daughter-in-law are driving home to Melbourne through a foresty area on the south coast. Fingers crossed please.

Wow.. think you could bottle some of that and send it here? I wouldn't mind melting away some of the snow. My little street is so badly plowed, I can't walk down it

I'm in perth western australia, it has been 40 degrees plus for days! So over it !

So, this is why I will never visit Australia at this time of year! Madness ... how do you even cope?! It gets to half that here (UK) and we all think it's the end of the world!
Hope your son and DiL made/make it home okay.

Its great to hear from some one from Australia! Its cold here in Mississisippi, USA, but I think Spring will come early again. Its winter here, and the temperature changes are reving up for Tornado weather. It builds from here on. The worst tornado they had in our area hit downtown, Vicksburg, MS in Dec with a F5 tornado and killed a lot of people. We don't get tornados touching down much. They float over our neighborhood and take down trees onto houses. We've had trees down on either end of our Street and wonder each time if our house will be hit. We also worry about forest fires with so many pine trees around. Sorry its so hot where you are. We swelter here from June till Sept

I checked the temperature here a while ago.. it was -2C with a wind chill of -8C, which really isn't that bad for overnight...
just checked, and at 2am Atlantic time, which was about 45mins ago, it was -1C with a wind chill of -6C, which again, is pretty good for overnight

Still 35 degrees celcius where I live at 1am this morning ! Nice and cool today but the heat wave conditions will return for Friday and Saturday . Over a 100 fires still burning here in NSW - firefighters doing an amazing job . Mary I hope your son and his wife are safe .

John and Belinda are leaving Eden this afternoon, so I am hoping they go straight through the foresty bits, rather that doing any walking or camping. They are mad keen bushwalkers and campers, but they are both very sensible. Besides they are getting my stern text messages. They should be home in a week, unless they do the really sensible thing and come home NOW.

This is why I was happy to leave Los Angeles - things kept bursting into flames the years that we were there. It got really old waking up in the morning to find the streets and vehicles covered in ash.
That being said, we are supposed to get down to -7 tonight and I would trade you in an instant. (Well, assuming you have A/C through the night - cannot sleep if I'm too hot.) Hope you and yours stay safe and cool, Mary!

MaryD, I watch the Australian Open every year (watching it right now, Andy Murray v some guy from Portugal), and they're talking about closing the roof because of the heat. And the new heat color has been on the news here in the US.
Smokingbeaver, my mother was from Mississippi, so I know it quite well. It can be hell on earth in mid-summer.
-
Mm - I was wondering yesterday whether you were watching the Australian Open this year. I remember you did last year. Today is another scorcher, and I was surprised to read in the paper this morning that they were not going to close the roof today - no matter what. I wonder if they will if one of the players has a heart attack. I don't know how they keep going.

It's baking hot in my part of Melbourne. I've been out for my daily walk, which was a bit tougher than it usually is. It's days like today that make fluid restricts hard to stick to.

It's snowing! :snowman; :snowman; :snowman;
England has no fleet of snow plows at the ready, so I am nervously monitoring the weather out my window. Gwyn canceled a day-trip an hour away because I can only use public transport right now (only have the one car), so I cannot get to the boys at a moments notice. Many schools in neighbouring villages have already shut. They are expecting up to 15 cm, which may make driving on unplowed roads impossible, at least for our car.
Why didn't we hold out for a move to Australia!!!
-
you would not like Australia today - new record set today for highest temperature ever in the Sydney basin 45 degrees Celsius - even hotter where I live on the outskirts , Horrible !
-

Because a maximum of three days of snowy frustration each year beats a stifling heat that you can't escape from? (But I'm biased; I can't stand being too hot. I'd much rather be too cold than too hot. Plus, snow days are exciting because they're so rare here.)

perhaps I should move there, then... I hate snow.. and there's no language barriers... though *someone* doesn't like my taste in British tv shows.. :rofl;

Gosh, really? But Coronation Street is just THE BEST. How could anyone think otherwise ... :P
