Title: Wheat
Post by: Whamo on December 31, 2012, 07:31:00 AM
I've read that wheat flour damages the kidneys.   Has anyone quit eating wheat flour and noticed an improvement?

I've been told by my dietician to stay away from whole grain flour, but nothing about plain wheat flour.

I was also told to stay away from whole grains but that "regular" flour was okay.

I don't think wheat flour damages the kidney. What I think they're talking about is whole wheat bread has more phosphorus (I think) and having your phosphorus levels too high is bad for you. If you take your binders and watch your phosphorus intake overall, you can have some of just about anything.

I do a lot of baking...The dietician at my clinic told me to use regular flour, and to try to stay away from wheat/whole grain flours.  I Also make my own baking powder.

I have heard that too. There are articles in the "alternative medicine" magazines and websites.

We went to a naturalpath  for about a year and a half before Ed went on Dialysis. He took us both off wheat and several other things. Saying both white and whole wheat are hard for our bodies to digest. It is especially hard on the kidneys.

The diet he put us on made me feel good and slowed my decline of kidney function, but didn't seem to do much for Ed.
We continued seeing this Dr for a few month after Ed went on dialysis but since insurance did not cover the appointment it got too expensive.

The whole grain advice relates to the fact that bread made with this type of flour contains higher levels of phosphorous.

I saw an article yesterday that said bread has more sodium in it than other foods.
