Title: cramping while filling and draining
Post by: rosebudd85 on December 02, 2012, 08:40:53 PM
I've been doing PD sinc Sept 1 and things were going great until around Nov 9th I wasn't getting alarms at night and things were good. Well around Nov 11th I hooked up and went to bed, I got woke up by pain in my upper abdomen with pain shooting up to my shoulder.  It felt like I had air in the line but knew I didn't, well It got so bad I ended up shutting of the machine and calling the nurse, they said come in to the er which I did and ended up getting admitted.  they found I had fluid on my right lung which they took out and figure I had a leak, so I still pee and my numbers weren't too bad so I got to take a 2 week break from PD well when I started on the 25th the first night I had a little pain but not bad.  The next few nights were good, but I did get a few alarms/  Well know I'm having terriable cramping when I drain and its in my lower right pelvic area, and hurts like hell.  Hurts so bad I can hardly move let alone get up and move around.  Anybody have suggestions?  I really like PD and don't wanna have to do Hemo so I'm hoping I can handle this or get fixed or whatever!!

Sounds like you may be taking off too much fluid. What strength solutions are you using, can you go to a lighter one? You might try drinking some water when you feel this coming on and see if that helps. If it eases the cramping, you are pulling too much. When I start cramping regularly, I keep a bottle of tonic water by my bed. Drinking that seems to help stop the cramping. The quinine in the tonic water stops it pretty quickly.

Good luck!

I'm using the 1.5 bags, and the cramping is only in my pelvic area.

Well, you can't go any lighter with your fluid. You might give the tonic water a try and see if it helps.

I'm on CAPD so I might be barking up the wrong tree.  I'm hoping to avoid having to go on to the machine because of the night time alarms and the potential of drain pain in the night.  I was talking to my favourite PD nurse a few weeks ago and she told me that drain pain in the night can be eliminated by setting the machine to not drain completely, thereby not getting to the drain pain stage.  It might be worth checking if this is so, and maybe making some adjustment to the machine.

Mary, I do CCPD and while I do have alarms during the night, they are more the exception than the rule. I typically get them when I roll over and crimp the patient line causing either a stoppage of a drain or fill. As for drain pain, I haven't had that happen to me in several weeks. Not saying it won't happen again, but neither of these is common. I think the convenience of doing my dialysis at night and freeing up my day is worth it.

I was wondering if rosebud's pain was drain pain rather than cramp.

I am enamoured (if that is possible) with my current routine which consists of 12 - 14 hour dwell with extraneal in at 11pm, then 2 x 1.5%'s in the afternoon.  I can garden, do my shopping, dash about to medical appointments all morning, etc. etc. without giving PD exchanges a thought.  I'm also losing the 3 kilos I put on when I was being a little too casual about the dwell times with the 1.5%'s.

Bless you my dear   :bow; My daughter takes great joy in reminding me how old and decrepit I am.

I was thinking it might be drain pain, but that really is a very unique pain, at least for me. I have never compared it with cramping, but I'm sure it could happen.

I think it is drain pain and it does feel like cramping to me but I quess its worth it in order to do PD at home and not have to go to the center.  Last night I had no pain at all   :yahoo;  I did get on my and and knees and rocked around and jiggled and as someone said did the diaylsis shuffle  ;D  I think it helped so for now I'm gonna keep moving and trying to get that cath to move cause I think that was the problem....thanks everyone!

:rofl; Dialysis shuffle?  It's funny, but I'm not laughing as the dialysis shuffle is no fun.
