Hello everyone!!! I am a new dialysis tech at a large unit in Philadelphia, PA. I am also a graduate of a very good 9-month dialysis course. My intro into health care has been slow - on purpose - as I come from the corporate world. I have been working as the unit secretary and as I had free time I started helping out caring for our patients. I started out doing little things (adjusting pillows, blankets, whatever) and have worked my way up to fulltime patient care. We are hospital based unit, we care for very sick patients during the day time hours.
Reading here I have to chuckle. Our unit is also very old with many staff having worked there for years and years. I work the late shift where many of our patients have been coming for so long its truly a big family. We have parties, big ones too where we all eat and drink - yes, while on the machine. Even the doc's come join us! They have been having these parties for years.
I still have much to learn but I really enjoy working in dialysis. I work with some of the finest folks you'll ever meet, I consider myself lucky. I honestly believe there are no better dialysis nurses and techs than those I work with. I feel like this is a field chosen for me and I see and feel much love, I see God's hand at work.
I don't know about anybody else but I work very hard for little money. If I wanted to get rich I would go back to my previous profession, for me its all about feelings.
Peace to all.

Hey Mudfever and welcome to IHD. This site was started so we could come here and vent as patients, but then caregivers came and even a doctor was here at one point. So, we welcome everyone. We can all learn from each other, Right?
Hope you find this site educational as well as entertaining.

Hi Mudfever,
With your attitude, you can come and work in Scotland anytime!! I've got a couple of dialysis nurses I could swap for you.

Welcome to our community. We are very glad that you chose to come and join us. You are very welcome to share your particular perspective with us. This site has developed to include everyone even remotely connected to this renal challenge (and even those not at all connected) and so there is a place for you here. Hope this helps you to understand the patients you have to deal with a bit more. And you can help us understand those who work with us a bit more!
Looking forward to hearing lots more from you.

Great story, if fee lthe same way financially but my energy goes into my kids and disability doesn't pay @#$%
I hope you find yourself in a white coat someday sounds like you'd be a great doc. If you really want to help your patients I will pray for you to talk to your doctors and nurses about starting a NxStage program if you haven't got one already. For everyperson you train on this machine you are giving the gift of life back to them. What could ever be more rewarding than that?
