My boyfriend, John, has been doing dialysis at home since April. Our original plan was to start in the evening right after the kids go to bed. We didn't realize that he would feel too energized to sleep. He is a teacher's assistant and needs to be up early. So its been a huge balancing act trying to get dialysis done early enough.
Anyone else experience this burst of energy? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Katie

i have insomnia really badly, sometimes even on non dialyss days.
tonight i came home from dialysis, hurting badly (neck injury) so i took a pain pill and it knocked me out for about 2 hours, then i fell asleep with my son at 8, and woke up at ten, not tired... this has happened for weeks now, im averaging 2-4 hours a sleep every night
when i first started, i would be up for days straight.
side effect of dialysis...

I too have the same problem. I am a stay at home mom and if d it really difficult to fit in. first thing in the morning is difficult because my BP ru s low in the morning, evening I can't do it for the same reason as you. then it has to be fitted in around my husband's work, son's activities, and meals.

Not sure this is the same, but I can only sleep about 1-1/2 hours then I'm awake for 5 minutes - 1-1/2 hours then fall asleep again for another 1-1/2 hours - and keep repeating this through the night. Grumpy

Grumpy, it sounds like you wake up every time your cycler changes modes... :rofl;

Joe you are about right. It drives my wife nuts too. Because I touch the screen (to lite it up) and see what is going on and that shines a bright light into the room and wakes her up. The funny thing is that she can go to sleep with the TV on (bright light and sound too) Grumpy

Sometimes, I have problems sleeping at night when I get off the machine, which is 2am or 3am in the morning. I'm up at 5:30am and sit on the bed until 6am than get up and start getting ready. However, while I'm at work, I will dose off about 2pm or 3pm. When I reach home I will get on the machine around 10pm and sleep most of the time while on the machine as the TV is now watching me.
Also, I notice that when I do it in the morning before starting my day, I will have energy for a short time. After cooking breakfast, I will find myself very tired and lazy. Wired but that's what D does to me in when I do morning treatments. When I do night treatments, I find myself feel good and energized and ready to take on the world after resting for a few hours. So, I decided to do D at night when I have something to do the next day and if I'm not doing anything that day, I will do it in the morning as I will get lazy very soon after. :urcrazy;

I thought I was the only weird one! ;D
It doesn't happen every time, but I often have a burst of energy right after I get off dialysis. I usually bounce around annoying my husband until I collapse in a fit of exhausted giggles. Because we are so tired ALL the time, it doesn't last long - about half an hour.
Have you thought about Extended Dialysis? Doing dialysis while he sleeps? Not all centers allow it, but it might help with your burnout and his sleeping. I am supposed to be starting Extended, but it's been put on hold while I participate in a program trial.
