I am going to have my parathyroid glands out next week. apart from the reasons for doing it, for anyone who has had it done, were there any other physical benefits that you noticed?

I didn't see anything.. i had 3 and 3/4 parathyroids removed 6 years ago, think.. i'm not really sure how long ago it was.. *L* it didn't really do anything for my phosphorus levels, though my pth levels did go down.. I have a scar along the base of my neck that no one can really see.. I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for.. I was promised that my phosphorus levels would go down within a few months, but they never really did

My husband had his removed. He had high phosphorus and PTH and also was getting calcium deposits in random places under his skin and in his joints which would cause him great amounts of pain. Within a month or so of the parathyroid removal, the calcium deposits under the skin had basically disappeared (body reabsorbs them) and he no longer has any joint pain. He no longer has to take phosphorus binders, just a couple Tums after every meal. All of his labs now look great once they got his calcium back up to normal.

My PTH has been HIGH for a long time. The Dr are considering having the parathyroid glands taken out. amanda - please let us know how it turns out. Thanks Grumpy

Pretty easy recovery time. Drain in the throat for a day or two. I have good scar, it is well hidden in neck folds.
JUst have to watch calcium levels closely.
I had a good surgeon. He explained everything and when nurses knew I was his patient they were very well coordinated in my care.
One nurse told me when he comes on floor everyone jumps to work.

it's great to have a doctor who puts fear into the nurses.. *LOL* I have a mom who puts fear into the doctors, so it's kinda the same thing.. *G*

op went fine although I am really swollen. the worst part with general anaesthetic is that I seem to get so e weird reaction where I have problems breathing, and I produce huge amounts to of snot and have a croup-like cough. on a previous occasion I had to go to the ER and was given iv prednisone which resolved the issue. any idea what this is?
the doc. said that three of my glands weren't that big. he trimmed two of them and removed the other. however, one of them was huge and he said that the only time that he has seen them this big was in primary hyperparathyroidism.

I'm glad to read your op went fine. The huge gland shows removed will very most likely make a huge difference.
