Title: Tums as binders - how long do they last?
Post by: Deanne on October 17, 2012, 12:34:24 PM
How long does a Tums remain effective when taken as a binder? If I take it 15 minutes before eating, I assume it's fine? What if I take it 1/2 hour after I eat? What about if I want a snack an hour later? Does anyone know how long they remain effective?

My dietician told me within a half hour of eating, either before or after.

Hubby was told after every meal and snack, even if that snack happens an hour after dinner. I think the calcium needs to be in the stomach at the same time as the phosphorus for them to be effective, but I could be totally wrong there.

I've always been told no more than 15 minutes before or after every time you eat, but the closer to the actual eating time, the better.
