Title: Whooping cough vaccine
Post by: Deanne on August 29, 2012, 10:06:10 AM
I'm getting very tired of being vaccinated against everything, but I'm considering one more jab - for whooping cough. It's becoming a problem in Oregon. Does anyone here know if it's a live vaccine? I kind of think it isn't. I shold call my tx center to ask about it, but I hate calling them. I just got back on active status after being vaccinated for shingles and I don't want to go back on hold for another vaccination.

Didn't you have whooping cough vaccination when you were younger? Most people get DTaP boosters when it's time for a tetanus update every 10 years. The P in that vaccine is pertussis or whooping cough. You can get this vaccine without going on hold as far as I know. Just check with your center. But they never would have listed you if you weren't up to date on this.

Deanne, if you have had a tetanus shot recently, that covers you for Whooping cough. It's called the "t-dap" shot. I had one 3 years ago, but forgot I had it. Earlier this year, I asked my transplant neph if I could have it, and she said I could *because* it is not a live vaccine. So, I got it again. Then found out, at my yearly PCP appointment, that I had it 3 years ago! I remember having the tetanus shot, but didn't know it included the whooping cough part! Both dr's told me that it doesn't hurt me to be more vaccinated, thankfully.

So yes, you can get the t-dap shot, if you need it.
